The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s central non-university research and science institution, seeks to appoint a new

SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR (F*M) at the Vienna Institute of Demography.

The statutory mission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is to “promote science in every aspect” by operating a total number of 25 research institutes which are engaged in innovative research of international standing in a variety of disciplines.

The Vienna Institute of Demography (VID; (www.oeaw.ac.at/vid) is one of the leading demographic research institutes in Europe. The research focus of VID concentrates on demography and human capital. The Institute combines innovative methodological work with empirical analysis and communication of scientifically based insights. It gives special attention to analysing and projecting demographic dynamics (fertility, mortality, migration) and the advancement of demographic methods to evaluate social and economic consequences of population ageing.

VID collaborates with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the University of Vienna in the Wittgenstein Centre of Demography and Global Human Capital (WIC). Close collaboration and joint office space exist with the recently established Department of Demography of the University of Vienna.

The VID receives basic funding from the OeAW, and additional national and international third-party funding for designated research projects. The institute offers a world-class scientific and collaborative research environment for about 40 scholars and is supported by skilled in-house administrative and technical staff.

The OeAW is looking for a strong and ambitious personality with innovative research ideas and an outstanding scientific track record, including a track record of raising major research grants. The ideal candidate will be a creative scholar with strong leadership and management skills who is well connected within the international scientific community. The OeAW seeks to appoint a Director who is enthusiastic about pursuing their own research within VID while also enhancing and encouraging the research of existing VID staff.

We offer an attractive recruitment package that includes an internationally competitive salary and a substantial annual research budget (personnel, consumables, investments).

The term of appointment as Scientific Director is tenured. The OeAW pursues a non-discriminatory employment policy and values equal opportunities, as well as diversity.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply and submit a detailed application to President Heinz Fassmann and Vice President Ulrike Diebold via the APPLY button containing:

  • Research concept and proposal for the strategic development of the VID (maximum 4 pages)
  • Curriculum vitae including an overview of recent research activities, funding (incl. the amount of subsidy) and activities as reviewer and member of boards and societies etc. (maximum 5 pages)
  • A list of publications, with pdf files of the five most important publications

Applications will be treated in strict confidence. Applications should be received by July 1, 2022.
