Position summary:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to lead a Decentralized Clinical Trial (DCT) of botanical treatments for Gulf War Illness (GWI). Remote, In-Office, or Hybrid positions will be considered.

About the lab: Our group is dedicated to curing chronic pain and fatigue conditions, with a focus on developing new diagnostic techniques and treatments for brain inflammation. We conduct clinical trials of pharmaceutical and botanical treatments, neuroimaging studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), observational analyses of inflammatory disease markers, and experimental immune tests with endotoxin and other agents.

Position description: This study is funded by a Department of Defense (DoD) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) grant. Individuals meeting criteria for GWI will be administered curcumin, resveratrol, or stinging nettle. The goal of the project is to determine if any of these botanical agents are helpful in reducing GWI symptoms. As a DCT, this project is conducted in the same way as a classic randomized controlled trial (RCT), with the exception that participations can participants from anywhere in the United States. The Fellow will lead the research team, and ensure that the project is conducted with the highest scientific and ethical rigor. They will oversee participant recruitment, coordination with colleagues, data collection and management, reporting to regulatory agencies, and scientific presentations.

The clinical trial is funded for three years.

Compensation and benefits: Salary will be negotiated based on previous experience. Full medical/dental/vision benefits are provided. The Fellow will have the opportunity to lead scientific publications.

Minimum Requirements: A doctorate-level degree, and/or strong experience in clinical research is expected. Candidates should be familiar with running RCT’s. 

Applicants should have experience leading research teams, and working with colleagues in person and on phone and videoconferencing. The candidate should also be able to mentor junior researchers. Other important traits are: ability to anticipate and deal with problems, high organization, and strong interpersonal skills.
