Job Description

The ASU Biodesign Center for Environmental Health Engineering is looking for a highly motivated, independent, hard-working individual to fill a role as a Field/Laboratory Research Technician. In this position, you will travel/collect environmental samples from field sites while interacting with external stakeholders, process these samples in the lab through various methods, perform quantitative analyses on the samples with downstream data handling and reporting. Time management skills, good organization, great work ethic, and a genuine interest in environmental research are a must.

Essential Duties

Field Duties:

  • Collection of wastewaters (and possibly surface water, groundwater, soils, sludges) from various locations throughout the Southwest personally by deploying active or passive water samplers or by picking up the materials from select locations.
  • Sample collections/pickups will include local locations across the Phoenix metro area and remote locations that require 6+ hours of drive time with overnight stays. Every month there will be a minimum of 2 trips with 2–3-night stays (possibly more).
  • Coordinate with community stakeholders for sample collection and/or pickup, and prepare for collection with all necessary materials.
  • Interface with stakeholders including municipal water and sewer personal, and other community members in person, Zoom, email, phone
  • Wear personal protective equipment including gloves, safety glasses, lab coat, reflective vests, hardhat, steel-toed boots, face shields, masks.
  • Must be comfortable driving in city traffic, remote locations/dirt roads for long periods of time. Navigate to areas with spotty cell service.
  • Move samplers, coolers (with ice/samples) in and out of vehicles, to-from lab.

    Lab Duties:

  • Processing of samples using the following tools: pipettes, centrifuges, autotraces, vacuum filtration manifolds, nitrogen dry-down stations, in biosafety cabinets or fume hoods
  • Make simple solutions/dilutions and follow predefined protocols
  • Perform additional sample preparation for quantitation using qPCR, LC-MS/MS or GC-MS/MS, for which you will be trained to run existing assays/methods
  • Perform data QA/QC, organization and reporting to other group members, clients and or collaborators
  • Perform basic lab upkeep including dishwashing, autoclaving waste, acid wash plastics/ashing glassware; moving/hooking up compressed gases and cryogenics, breakdown recyclables, organize storage locations including refrigerators/freezers.
  • Keep and inventory of consumables/execute ordering
  • Option to contribute to scientific publications

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    Desired Qualifications

  • Laboratory experience in chemistry or biology settings
  • Evidence of a driver’s license with a good driving record, insured vehicle (or ability to rent vehicle)
  • Flexibility with schedule including >8 hours per day/weekends
  • Ability to lift 35+ lbs.
  • Evidence of being self-motivated
  • Experience in being able to troubleshoot field and lab instrumentation
  • Experience deploying water samplers
  • Experience running qPCR assays
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mass spectrometry

    Working Environment

  • Regular activities require ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks, and to communicate through verbal and written work.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Work individually and as part of a team
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 35 pounds.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories such as lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and respirator.
