Job Details
In a new research center for drug discovery (http://www.cadd2drug.org) at the Shenzhen
Institutes of Advanced Science (SIAT)/Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) several postdoc
and PhD positions are open for investigating the structure and function of membrane
proteins mediating central cellular signaling processes (e.g., G-protein coupled receptors,
channel proteins, transporters). We are looking for excellent candidates in cell/molecular
biology, structural biology, or biophysics, with experience in the following fields:
-Heterologous expression and functional characterization of membrane proteins
(Especially GPCRs, G proteins, channels, transporters) in mammalian or insect cells.
-Purification of membrane proteins for biophysical and structural studies.
-Structural characterization of membrane proteins by cryo-electron microscopy
(Single-particle analysis and tomography) or X-ray crystallography.
-Single-molecule imaging of membrane proteins in mammalian cells by optical microscopy.
Candidate Requirements
Have a PhD degree (graduated within 3 years or going to have a PhD degree within 6 months, and he or she should be under 33 years old.
in cell/molecular biology, structural biology or biophysics, especially with experience in the following fields:
- Heterologous expression and functional characterization of membrane proteins (especially GPCRs, G proteins, channels, transporters) in mammalian or insect cells.
- Screening of compounds which activate GPCRs and channel proteins in combination with computational biology.
- Purification of membrane proteins for biophysical and structural investigations.
- Structural characterization of membrane proteins by cryo-electron microscopy (single-particle analysis and tomography) or X-ray crystallography.
- Imaging of cellular processes by high-resolution optical microscopies (STED, PALM or STORM).
- Labeling of cellular components and single-particle imaging of membrane proteins in mammalian cells by optical microscopy.
- Investigating membrane proteins (in living cells and in purified state) by fluorescence techniques (e.g. fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, single-molecule spectroscopy and imaging).
- Characterization of molecular interactions (protein-protein, ligand-receptor) by biophysical techniques such as surface plasmon resonance, isothermal calorimetry, radioligand binding assays,
- Developing microfluidics and lab-on-chip devices to investigate ligand-receptor interactions in living cells, membrane particles and isolated membrane proteins.

Prof. Horst Vogel is member of the Swiss Academy of Sciences (2004)as well as of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) USA(2014). He is also a Chinese government Friendship Award Owner (2020), an "Outstanding International Scholar", and "Special Expert " of "President's International Fellowship Initiative, Chinese Academy of Sciences" (2019 elected). Before moving to SIAT in 2019, he was full professor of Biophysical Chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). His activities range from biophysics, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology to micro- and nanotechnologies. The research activities of his laboratory lead to important developments, which have found widespread interest and applications (Publications: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=Qchl34UAAAAJ&hl=en)
The Computer-Aided Drug Discovery Research Center (CADD) was established in June 2019, based on Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. CADD center integrates computational biology, biophysics, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, biotechnology and other disciplines to efficiently screen and design new drugs under the guidance of computational theory. The research center is committed to building a world-class new drug innovation team, based on independent biomedical technology innovation, focusing on novel drug development.
