Position Overview
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral phycologist interested in researching the biochemical composition and optimized cultivation and processing techniques for algae species. Our aim is to identify multiple promising macro- and micro-algae species to be used as livestock feeds in order to develop new markets and provide key solutions to agriculture that includes boosting animal health and dairy productivity and reducing agriculture’s greenhouse gas emission footprint via suppression of enteric methane emissions in ruminants. Experience in any of the following would be a definite benefit: aspects of nutrient uptake by algae during culture, allelochemical and antimicrobial defense, environmental stress tolerance, reactive oxygen regulation and secondary metabolite production, halogenated compound generation, and varied tissue processing techniques specifically including lyophilization and fermentation. This position is initially funded for three years from a USDA NIFA SAS program award Coast-Cow-Consumer. It will offer opportunities for multi-institution and transdisciplinary collaboration across the U.S. with academic, non-profit, and commercial entities and pursuit of independent funding. This position would be responsible for the supervision of technical staff, graduate students, and undergraduate interns. Screening of candidates will begin May 30th with expectation candidate will be available in July, 2022. The salary band for this position is $51,617 - $74,324, with a generous benefits package including health care, retirement contribution, and paid time off.


Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Ecology, Phycology, Aquaculture, Food Science or a related field
  • Knowledge of algal biochemistry and physiology
  • Experience with algae cultivation, husbandry, and processing would be a plus
  • Strong oral and written skills, demonstrated publication record, ability to work in a cross-institutional team
