Clinical Laboratory Scientist

Marshfield Medical Center, the Marshfield Clinic Health System flagship hospital, cares for patients from throughout central, northern and western Wisconsin. Marshfield Medical Center offers primary, secondary, tertiary and Level II Trauma Center hospital services provided by Marshfield Clinic specialists. The facility hosts nearly 40 specialties including cancer, heart and orthopedics care, as well as a 24-bed Children's Hospital equipped with the latest technology and highly-trained hospitalists and nurses providing nearly 30 pediatric specialty services, including: child abuse-neglect, gastroenterology, pediatric intensive care, neonatology, and surgery. Access to a Level II Trauma Center, ensures 24-hour availability of anesthesiologists, dedicated medical equipment, operating room facilities, physician specialists, surgeons, and trauma nurses.

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist, PhD provides technical direction, test interpretation, quality, and clinical support for a specific discipline within the service line’s laboratories.  This individual develops cost effective methods and systems to meet testing needs; closely involved with operationalization of new tests throughout our system. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist, PhD may act as a CLIA medical director for assigned regional lab locations. This individual provides education to medical and technical staff, and clinical consultation to internal and external medical staff, pharmacy, and nursing.

The successful Ph.D. clinical scientist candidate will have doctoral-level technical oversight in the microbiology and molecular pathology sections of our main lab in Marshfield WI. The microbiology section relies on both traditional culture methods as well as state of the art MALDI TOF MS, automated rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and sample-to-answer nucleic acid tests. The molecular pathology lab’s primary focus is on the diagnosis of infectious diseases using FDA-cleared platforms. This oversight includes maintaining successful quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing programs. General and biological safety will be ensured with periodic risk assessment studies and membership on the lab’s safety committee. The candidate will work closely with two technical specialists.

Other primary duties include consultations with the medical staff on test choice and the interpretation of results, advising our pathologists on infectious diseases cases, and assisting the lab staff on daily rounds and when otherwise needed. Additional essential activities outside the lab will include standing memberships on the system’s antimicrobial stewardship & infection prevention committees, and maintaining professional relations with our public health colleagues.

A Ph.D. in microbiology or a related biological science, postdoctoral training from a CPEP-accredited medical microbiology program or equivalent, and eligibility or certification for the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) are all required. Experience with laboratory developed tests (LDT) NATs is a plus.
