The primary purpose of the Research Scientist is to apply technical expertise and experience to plan, coordinate, design, supervise and carry out research projects in the T cell therapy laboratory. Provide guidance to junior members and collaborate with scientists in MD Anderson and outside, foreign institutions to coordinate research. Impacts cancer research throughout the institution. Manage and direct complex activities directly related to multiple researchers and projects across labs and institutional efforts.

KEY FUNCTIONS:

1. Plan, organize, and direct scientific research projects.
* Determine specific goals or objectives to be attained.
* Develop and maintain standard procedures and protocols to ensure the quality and integrity of procedures performed.
* Interpret, analyze and summarize data for presentation and publication.
* Acquire new technologies and disseminate to members of the Lab

2. Supervise the design, development, or adaptation of equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.

3. Compile, write, and submit reports to superior.
* Maintain an up-to-date, organized, and legible laboratory journal that records all experiments in detail and ensure that subordinates do the same.
* Compile, write, and submit project results to the supervising Principal Investigator(s)
* Prepare scientific documents for publication.
* Present findings of research projects to professional groups.

4. Participate in scientific research projects.
* Work with the Principal Investigators at MD Anderson Cancer Center and foreign institutions
* Learn to operate laboratory equipment and apparatus and perform routine operator maintenance.
* Participate in adopting new techniques and learning new skills to enhance research efforts.
* Maintain assertiveness and flexibility in approaching new techniques and responsibilities, utilizing good work habits and time management.
* Maintain alertness and careful attention to avoid injury to self and others due to chemicals and hazardous materials in the laboratory.

5. Read and comprehend scientific literature relevant to ongoing research to maintain a current understanding of the field.
* Be able to introduce new methodology to the laboratory when available through verbal and written communication
* The ability to speak in front of groups of scientists.
* Maintain thorough accurate, legible, and organized handwritten records, or alternatively a computer database, detailed experimental records section.

EDUCATION:
Required: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.

Preferred: Knowledge of scientific instruments used in related fields of research; such as, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, computer imaging, pharmacokinetics, and artificial intelligence computer systems design.
