The professional registered nurse (RN) integrates and practices according to the California Nurse Practice Act in alignment with City of Hope and the Department of Nursing and Patient Care Services' mission, vision, and values. The RN is responsible for implementing the nursing process and collaborates with the interprofessional team while maintaining continuous focus on the patient and family. At the level of Registered Nurse IV (RNIV), the RN is a proactive change agent who actively participates and leads the integration of research, evidence-based practice (EBP), innovation, and performance improvement to the highest level of quality care. A RNIV engages in and role models lifelong learning, supports professional growth of peers and future RNs, and is dedicated to the advancement of the professional of nursing.
The RNIV is an expert oncology-certified nurse and is an essential member of the oncology care team within our clinical network sites supporting and guiding our patients and their families throughout their cancer experience. The RNIV partners with the Oncologist and/or APP to ensure our cancer patients receive excellent clinical care, with the role encompassing the following key responsibilities of an Ambulatory Oncology Nurse:
- Care coordination for new patients as they learn to navigate oncology care
- New Patient orientation process (teach about the practice, care team members, cancer care overview)
- Pre-treatment education and preparation
- Phone triage for patients calling with acute symptoms during office hours, in collaboration with the Infusion RNs)
- Symptom/side effect/toxicity assessment of patients triaged to come to office for assessment
- Oversight, tracking and monitoring of patients on oral chemotherapy
- Clinical support for prior authorization issues (in collaboration with Medical Assistants)
- Facilitation of referral for supportive care services, care transitions, end of life planning
RNIVs role model and actively lead collaboration and teamwork to achieve positive working relationships with all nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, allied health and support staff members, with attention to self-care and healthy work / life balance.
Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
- Master's degree in Nursing acceptable if Bachelor's degree is not in nursing.
- Three years related experience
- Current California Registered Nurse license
- Current National certification must be maintained to retain RN IV status
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Card through American Heart Association
- ONS Chemo/Bio Certification (or obtain within 6 months of hire)
- OCN certification (or to be obtained within 1 year of hire)
