Functioning under minimal supervision and broad direction from the Nuclear Pharmacist-in Charge of the
Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope Radiopharmacy, the Nuclear Pharmacist must support significant
research contributions to established institutional clinical and basic research activities and, accordingly, be
able to design, execute, evaluate and present the results of experiments.
The following are essential job accountabilities:
Key Responsibilities include:
- Demonstrating intermediate to advanced knowledge of radiopharmaceutical radiolabeling,
- compounding and dispensing procedures.
- Following radiation safety principles as outlined in the institution's Radiation Safety Manual.
- Initiating, generating, and following Standard Operating Procedures for radiolabeling,
- compounding, quality control and dispensing of radiopharmaceuticals; applying the best Nuclear
- Pharmacy and both Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices.
- Following established guidelines for the operation, calibration, maintenance and QC of survey
- meters, dose calibrators and wipe test analyzers (i.e. multi-channel analyzer/single channel
- analyzer), Radio-ITLC scanner, HPLC and reverse phase HPLC and Gas Chromatography.
- As required, ensuring the Radiopharmacy Technicians have the appropriate training and experience
- to conduct the daily operations of the Radiopharmacy in compliance with SOPs and to ensure that
- all such activities are performed completely, safely, and without risk of harm to patients.
- Proactively developing and maintaining knowledge of Nuclear Pharmacy Practices, in accordance
- with Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Food and Drug Administration, and California State Board of
- Implements the guidelines and provisions from Nuclear Regulatory Commission to assist in
- achieving a satisfactory result for the Radiopharmacy operations, including but not limited to dose
- calibrator's consistency test, linearity test, and accuracy test.
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:Minimum Education:
- Assists the Pharmacist-in-Charge of the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope Radiopharmacy, by ensuring the radiopharmaceutical products Radiopharmacy Nuclear Pharmacist are produced/inspected/released/packaged/stored and procured of appropriate quality, as required, to achieve the requisite standards in accordance with CA State Board of Pharmacy,
- USP 797, USP 800, USP 823, and proposed USP 825, Food and Drug Administration, and United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
- Prepares and dispositions the preparation and dispensing of radiopharmaceuticals used for patient diagnosis and/or therapy, applying principles and practices of the Nuclear Pharmacy.
- Performs all required quality control procedures including radiochemical purity and identity, half-life determination, gamma spectrum analysis, immunoreactivity, endotoxin and sterility testing.
- Receives radiopharmaceutical prescriptions from the physician and reviews prescription to determine suitability of the radiopharmaceutical for intended use, utilizing knowledge of
- radiopharmaceutical preparation and principles of drug biodistribution.
- Calculates, or oversees the calculation of, the amount of radiopharmaceutical required to provide patient with desired level of radioactivity at the prescribed time, for diagnostic or therapeutic use, according to established rates of biodistribution and radioisotope decay.
- Compounds, or directs the compounding of, radioactive materials and reagents used to prepare radiopharmaceutical, following standard pharmacy practices.
- Assays prepared radiopharmaceuticals, or directly supervises the assay, using appropriate instrumentation to ensure that patient or research subject receives the required dose.
- Conducts, or supervises the conduct of, research to develop or improve radiopharmaceuticals use/production within the licensed Radiopharmacy.
- Actively participates in the development of radiolabeled compounds for diagnostic and/or therapeutic experiment in cooperation with Principal Investigators.
- Prepares reports for regulatory agencies to obtain approval for testing and use of new radiopharmaceuticals.
- Maintains controlled records for receipt, storage, preparation, disposal of radiopharmaceuticals and radioactive materials according to the Department of Transportation and institution's guidelines.
- Supports Radiopharmacy technician training, education and development.
- Occasionally conducts training for students and medical professionals concerning radiopharmaceutical use, characteristics and compounding procedures.
- Attends and actively participates in departmental staff meetings, Theranostics Modality meetings, and Radiopharmaceuticals Committee, and other meetings as required.
- Maintains effective communication with Nuclear Pharmacist-in-Charge, disease and modality team leaders, program leaders, faculty, managers, and staff.
- Maintains inventory and records to ensure proper utilization of materials and drug accountability for both FDA-approved and research radiopharmaceuticals.
- Develop and document Standard Operating Procedures and standards to ensure compliance, laboratory safety and overall organization and cleanliness.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by Nuclear Pharmacist-in-Charge of the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope Radiopharmacy.
- Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D.) from an accredited pharmacy School.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a laboratory/research setting with demonstrated experience with radiopharmaceutical use.
- Knowledge of USP 797, USP 823, and proposed USP 825.
- CA State Board of Pharmacy license required.
- 3 years of experience in a laboratory/research setting with demonstrated experience with radiopharmaceutical use.
- Knowledge of USP 797, USP 823, and proposed USP 825.
