The Department of Biology at Georgia State University invites applications for a full-time Academic Professional position to begin in August 2022. The mission of the Department of Biology is to excel in life science research and education. We are committed to the success of our highly diverse student population in the classroom and in their pursuit of competitive academic and professional opportunities after graduation. Academic Professionals at Georgia State are non-tenure-track faculty with both service (51%) and teaching (49%) requirements. Service includes development of effective teaching methods and exercises in a two-semester course series introducing fundamental concepts in cell biology, information flow, continuity of life, and evolution during the first semester and moving on to the diversity of life, physiology, and ecology during the second semester. Service also includes supervision of teaching laboratory operations and recruitment and training of teaching assistants. This is a full-time, 12-month, renewable appointment with opportunities for promotion to the ranks of Senior Academic Professional and Principal Senior Academic Professional.
- A Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field
- Ability to teach biology non-majors in introductory Biology I and II lecture and laboratory courses.
- Experience with teaching biology laboratory courses
- Experience integrating active learning to increase student engagement
- Commitment to relate well to students from diverse backgrounds
- Willingness to teach in face-to-face, hybrid, or online modalities
- Experience supervising teaching laboratory operations, including recruitment and training of teaching assistants
- Readiness to infuse teaching labs with engaging and impactful hands-on activities and to be progressive in laboratory pedagogy
- A commitment to departmental, university, and/or public service
