Postdoctoral Position Available

A postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Jiang Zhu's laboratory for highly motivated candidates who are interested in vaccine development for diverse viral pathogens, such as SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, RSV, HCV, Ebola/Marburg, Flu, ZIKV, and MERS-CoV. Salary is in the range of $62,400 to $70,000 depending on prior research experience and qualifications. Dr. Zhu holds a joint appointment in the Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology (ISCB) and in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research in La Jolla, CA (https://www.scripps.edu).

Dr. Zhu's laboratory combines structure-based antigen design, protein nanoparticle engineering, animal immunization, single-cell technologies, and immunological analyses to develop and evaluate next-generation vaccines. Currently, two vaccine candidates for SARS-CoV-2 and HIV-1 are under clinical development and expected to start phase-1 human trials in 2022. Details of Dr. Zhu's laboratory, on-going research projects, and recent publications can be found at https://www.jzhulab.org/. Dr. Zhu is also the scientific founder and interim Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of Uvax Bio LLC (https://www.ufovax.com/), a vaccine biotechnology company that aims to address global health challenges with innovative vaccine solutions.

Research projects may involve but are not limited to (1) structural biology: crystallographic analysis of antibody/antigen complexes and electron microscopic analysis of nanoparticles; (2) immunology: vaccine-induced immunity in animal models and humans using single-cell sorting, single-cell immune profiling, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis; (3) virology: infections and diseases caused by SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, RSV, HCV, Flu, and Ebola.

Successful candidates will have a recent Ph.D. in biophysics, structural biology, immunology, virology, microbiology, or other related fields. Candidates with prior research experience in structural biology and immunology are especially encouraged to apply. Interested applicants should send the following materials in an application packet, preferably as a single PDF file, by email to Dr. Jiang Zhu (jiang@scripps.edu):

   1) Cover letter indicating current and future research interests

   2) Expected starting date

   3) Curriculum vitae

   4) Brief summary of previous research experience (2-3 pages)

   5) Names and contact information for 3 references.
