Summary

Under the supervision of the PI, the Senior Research Assistant (SRA) works independently to support research on the role of nutrition in the regulation of growth of skeletal muscle in early life. Our laboratory uses a comprehensive approach to investigate coordinated responses of protein synthesis and degradation, intracellular signaling, gene expression, and metabolism to premature birth and dietary interventions. The SRA will work as the lead to manager a team of postdoctoral fellows and technical staff to execute the PI's research and in support of multiple research projects. Job Duties

  • Plans, directs, and conducts animal research studies with neonatal pigs including surgeries, husbandry, clinical care, and specimen collection and handling.
  • Performs analytical work on collected specimens using a variety of biochemical, cellular, and molecular techniques for determination of protein metabolism, nutrient signaling, and cell growth.
  • Conducts biochemical assays using colorimetric, fluorometric, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and mass spectrometry methods.
  • May perform cellular and molecular method and protocols to quantify protein and gene expression using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), Western immunoblotting, and Real-Time Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). Willing to train.
  • Independently troubleshoots experiments and assists with the development and implementation of new standard operating procedures/processes for the laboratory.
  • Maintains careful and detailed documentation of experiments in lab notebooks and collected data and its analysis. This requires a working knowledge of spreadsheets and word processing skills.
  • Analyzes, summarizes, and evaluates data from research experiments.
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of research staff.
  • Trains and orients new research personnel.
  • Responsible for coordinating purchasing of laboratory supplies and maintenance of necessary reagents and supplies to support timely laboratory analysis.
  • Assists PI with IACUC compliance and other lab inspections.
  • Serves as the liaison between the lab and BCM Environmental Safety Officers for all laboratory protocols, including chemical, biological, and OHP safety protocols.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in science
  • Experience in laboratory and animal research
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
