The Department of Oral Health Sciences of the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Charleston, South Carolina is recruiting candidates with expertise in Microbial Physiology/Metabolism and Functional Microbiome researching on host-pathogen interaction for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor level as part of our strategic growth in the areas of Oral Health against Systemic Chronic Diseases. The applicant is expected to develop and maintain a vigorous, NIH funded research program related to Oral Biology that aligns with current research interests within the department, and our allied nationally funded research centers and key programs in the MUSC. The candidate will report to the chair of Oral Health Sciences and contribute to various aspects of the school’s educational mission including training of both dental and graduate students, serving the college and university in accordance with its strategic goals. Graduate /Post-doctoral education is currently supported by a recently renewed T32 grant from the NIDCR.  The successful applicant should possess a PhD., a DDS-PhD or an equivalent degree, and demonstrate strong aptitude for leading funded research program in Molecular Microbiology and Microbiome in Oral Biology. Successful candidates will be visionary, collegial, and highly motivated experts in their field.

In 2015, we completed state-of-the-art renovations of our departmental floor (18,000 sq ft) in the Basic Science Building. The brand new, open-lab concept has optimized space for performing cutting-edge biomedical research and is designed for collegiality and collaboration. Partnering with the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Health Professionals and Centers, such as NCI-designated Hollings cancer center, along with the contiguous Drug Discovery and Bioengineering Buildings, our faculty establish and maintain fruitful, collaborative projects with basic science researchers and clinical partners. The Department also manages a fully functional BSL2/ABSL2 facilities including Gnotobiotic Core.
