Dear scholars:
The Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas), set up by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in 2021, aims to further improve the talent funding system, give full play to the role of NSFC in recruiting and cultivating talents, and attract overseas outstanding talents to return (come) to work in China. This program invites overseas scholars who have achieved a high level of performance in natural sciences and engineering technology to work in China, decide their research directions and carry out innovative research, so as to promote the rapid growth of young scientific and technological talents, and cultivate a group of distinguished academic backbones who are expected to make achievements in the forefront of world science and technology. 

Founded in 1983 with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Shenzhen University (SZU) has developed into a high-level comprehensive university with distinctive characteristics, strong potential, reputation and influence domestically and globally. In order to better serve the major strategic needs of the country including the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Shenzhen Pilot Demonstration Zone, and build SZU into a world-class university, SZU is now seeking excellent overseas scholars to join us in applications for the Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas). 

I. Benefits and Support

◆ Positions
Successful candidates will be employed as distinguished professors. Those who meet relevant requirements will be granted the competence of PhD supervisor. 

◆ Remuneration
i. Successful candidates will enjoy a competitive salary and research start-up funds, as well as other benefits including high-level scientific research achievement awards, and scientific research performance salary. Salary will be offered to excellent candidates on a case-by-case basis.
ii. Candidates who meet relevant requirements will also enjoy the performance salary provided by the “Pengcheng Peacock Project”.

◆ Facilities
i. SZU boasts more than 300 scientific research platforms at the national, provincial, municipal and university levels to help talents grow. 
ii. SZU has advanced experimental equipment in various areas, and has also built a world-class  large-scale equipment sharing service platform to assist talents to carry out multidisciplinary cutting-edge research in areas such as new generation information technology, green and low-carbon, high-end manufacturing, biomedicine, new materials, marine science and engineering based on large-scale computing and simulation platforms.
iii. SZU assists in docking on-campus scientific research platform with facilities at all levels of Shenzhen to meet the research needs of talents.
iv. SZU offers appropriate experimental sites, and provides support in the establishment of innovative scientific research teams through appointing faculty members and full-time researchers. Preferential policy is offered in recruiting graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.     

◆ Logistics Support
i. SZU offers Government-owned apartments on campus with a preferential rent. Candidates who meet relevant requirements can enjoy Shenzhen’s talent housing policy according to the final announcement of the Shenzhen government. 
ii. The SZU Affiliated Education Group has three kindergartens, four primary schools and four secondary schools, providing high-quality education services for the children of faculty and staff.
iii. Successful candidates will enjoy the health care services for talents provided by the Shenzhen government. SZU has two affiliated general hospitals: SZU General Hospital and South China Hospital, both of which are First-Class Hospital at Grade III, providing quality medical services for faculty and staff. 
iv. SZU provides assistance in the application of “Guangdong Superior Talent Card” and “Shenzhen Pengcheng Talent Card”. Successful candidates will enjoy one-stop talent supporting services provided by Guangdong Province and Shenzhen in settlement, medical care, children’s education, and entry and exit.

◆ Other Support
SZU offers precise guidance in applications for the Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas).

II. Requirements

◆ Applicants shall meet the following requirements:
i. The applicant shall abide by the laws of the People’s Republic of China, demonstrate scientific integrity, and actively practice the spirit of science in the new era;
ii. The applicant’s research direction is mainly in the fields of natural science and engineering technology;
iii. The applicant has obtained formal teaching or scientific research positions in overseas universities, scientific research institutions, and corporate R&D institutions, and has more than 36 consecutive months of work experience as of April 15, 2022; Requirements for working years may be relaxed for those who have obtained PhD degrees overseas and have outstanding performance; 
iv. The applicant has obtained peer recognized scientific research or technical achievements, and has the potential to become an academic leader or outstanding talent in this field;
v. The applicant has not yet returned to work in China (coming to China) full-time, or returning to work in China (coming to China) after January 1, 2021. Upon receiving the grant, the applicant must resign from overseas employment or have no employment overseas and return to China to work full-time for not less than 3 years;
vi. Subject to other requirements in the 2022 NSFC Project Guide.

◆ Restrictions
The Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas) is subject to the limit requirements which are verified in the “2022 NSFC Project Guide”. Successful candidates can only apply for or undertake a national project at the same level, and reverse-level applications are not allowed.     

III. About SZU
The first higher education institution in Shenzhen, SZU has been growing rapidly along with the development of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. SZU began enrollment less than 8 months after its founding, and has formed a complete talent training system for undergraduates, masters and doctorates only 23 years after its establishment, creating the “SZU speed”, a landmark in the history of Chinese higher education. Today, SZU has 41,000 students, 4,001 faculty members and 11 disciplines. Young as it is, SZU has achieved leapfrog development in discipline construction, scientific research, faculty strength and talent training, making the new “SZU speed” in China’s higher education reform and development in the new era.  

◆ Strong disciplines
i. SZU is one of the fastest-growing universities in ESI ranking in Mainland China. A total of 12 disciplines, namely, Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Materials Science, Biology and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, General Social Science, Environmental Science/Ecology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Agricultural Science and Botany and Zoology are listed among the top 1% in ESI, ranking 3rd among universities in Guangdong Province. Three disciplines of Engineering, Computer Science, and Materials Science are listed among the top 0.2% in ESI, and Chemistry and Clinical Medicine are listed among the top 0.3%.
ii. SZU has maintained the momentum of rapid growth in the four world-renowned university rankings, ranking 28th, 26th, 36th and 17th among universities in Mainland China according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), U.S. News, QS Rankings and the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings in 2021, with an average ranking of 27. With an annual increase of around 100 places worldwide, SZU has maintained ranking of top 30 among universities in Mainland China, becoming a window for China’s transformation from a large country to a strong country in higher education.  
iii. Seven new doctoral programs were approved in 2021, ranking 1st in the actual total number of newly added doctoral programs among universities in Mainland China, and covering basic disciplines such as mathematics, science, chemistry, and biology. Currently, there are 17 doctoral first-level disciplines, 9 post-doctoral research stations and 1 post-doctoral workstation, greatly enhancing SZU’s capacity to serve national and local strategic needs.   

◆ Fruitful scientific research achievements
i. The number of projects funded by the NSFC has hit a record high. 
A total of 375 projects were approved by the NSFC in 2021, ranking 2nd among universities in Guangdong Province for five consecutive years, top 15 in Mainland China for two consecutive years, and 1st among local universities for three consecutive years. There are 20 national key projects. 
ii. Research funding continues to rise. 
Research funding reached 1.66 billion yuan in 2021, an average annual increase of more than 30% since 2012.
iii. The total number of high-quality papers has risen annually with top papers published. 
In 2021, 5689 high-quality papers in science, engineering and medicine were published, a year-on-year increase of 8.14%, and 721 high-quality papers in humanities and social sciences were published. Three top papers with SZU as the corresponding affiliation were published in Nature and Science, ranking 17th among universities in Mainland China. 
The number of highly cited scientists reached 8 in 2021. Forty-two faculty members were identified as the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists based on lifetime citation impact and 135 were named based on the 2020 citation impact, ranking 40th and 31st respectively among selected institutions in China. 
iv. The number of PCT patent applications published has ranked among the top 3 universities worldwide for three consecutive years. 
SZU ranked 1st among Chinese universities in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020. The cooperation with the world’s top 500 and China’s top 500 enterprises has continued to deepen with the horizontal contract amount reaching 209 million yuan.

◆ Professional and passionate faculty
SZU has become an ideal place for overseas and high-end talents. Currently, SZU boasts highly professional, competitive, innovative and potential faculty. 
i. There are 24 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, including 14 full-time members. There are 22 foreign academicians, including 13 full-time members. There are 231 high-level talents above the provincial level and 1,648 talents at the municipal level.
ii. In 2021, 23 faculty members were newly selected as talents at the national level, including 2 Distinguished Scholars and 6 Excellent Scholars, a new record high, among whom the number of faculty members cultivated by the university surpassed the number of those who are introduced for the first time, demonstrating a better environment for growth for high-level talents.
