Post-Doctoral Fellowship Position: Cancer Care Delivery Research

Full Time

The Division of Population Sciences in the Department of Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute seeks a post-doctoral fellow to study novel methods of cancer care delivery that could improve symptom management and patient outcomes using electronic-PROMs, health information technology, and coordinated care-management.

The Division of Population Sciences is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of health services researchers, statisticians, programmers, project managers and research assistants who conduct innovative population-based research focused on detecting cancer early, evaluating cancer risk, preventing cancer at the community level, measuring the quality and outcomes of cancer therapy, and improving cancer outcomes and the care delivery system. The post-doctoral fellow will work with the investigative team overseeing the SIMPRO project, including Dr. Michael Hassett (Associate Professor of Medicine and co-Principal Investigator of SIMPRO), Dr. Andrea Enzinger (Associate Professor of Medicine and co-investigator of SIMPRO), and Dr. Alexi Wright (Associate Professor of Medicine and co-investigator of SIMPRO). The team also includes a project manager, two research assistants, a computer programmer, a biostatistician, and multiple other research collaborators.

Requirements:

  • Areas of research to be undertaken in this fellowship could include:
    • characterizing the patterns and predictors of self-reported symptom data for cancer patients from diverse backgrounds treated in community-based settings.
    • elucidating factors that impact patient engagement with and use of web-health portals, ePROMs, and self-management programs.
    • identifying barriers to and facilitators of clinician adoption of EHR-based symptom management programs.
    • determining the impact of symptom management programs on patient outcomes.
  • These studies will rely on access to existing data collected for the ongoing multi-institutional SIMPRO (Symptom Management Implementation of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Oncology) research consortium.
  • SIMPRO is an NCI-funded project focused on improving symptom control for cancer patients using systematic symptom reporting and guideline-based clinical management.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, implementation science, nursing, social work, or a related field.
  • Strong analytic and writing skills, robust attention to detail, a sincere desire to work in a dynamic collaborative environment, and the ability to think and learn independently.
  • Experience with EHR data, implementation science, scripted programming (e.g., SAS, STATA, R), and/or mixed-methods research would be advantageous.
  • The successful candidate should intend to build an academic research career and will be expected to develop and implement funded research studies, undertake data analysis, generate peer-reviewed manuscripts, and develop grant proposals to support these research initiatives.

Interested candidates should submit an electronic copy of the curriculum vitae, plus a cover letter describing their experience, research, and goals. The start date for this position is flexible. Applications will be reviewed as received so applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The appointment is for one year with the intention that it would be renewed for a second-year contingent upon satisfactory performance during year one.
