The Department of Health Sciences and Technology (www.hest.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position.

The new professor will be expected to be a world-renown expert in the field of ageing research, in the promotion of healthy ageing or in the prevention of ageing-associated diseases like neurodegeneration or diabetes. In particular, she or he may have a long-standing expertise in the elucidation of biological mechanisms of ageing using human cohorts and/or model organisms to apply expertise in functional genetics or pharmacological/nutritional interventions. Alternatively, the successful candidate is an expert in applying exercise to prevent or mechanistic aids to ameliorate symptoms of functional decline. The research will provide unprecedented approaches to promote healthy ageing by preventing or reverting physiological, yet widely undefined hallmarks of higher age. Specific expertise may include (i) biological mechanisms of ageing, using model organisms like yeast, fruit flies, roundworms and/or mice, (ii) genetics of ageing and age-associated diseases, including neurodegeneration and metabolic disorders, (iii) mechanism-based prevention of physiological decline by pharmacological, nutritional or exercise interventions, as well as tissues engineering and replacement, and (iv) the quantification, maintenance and restoration of movement capacity applying high-end engineering and robotics approaches. Particular interest goes to researchers with a translational medical focus.

Additional prerequisites are a strong motivation and an indisputable commitment to teaching. The professorship will be embedded in the Department’s programme in Health Sciences and Technology, Food Sciences, as well as Human Medicine. In general, at ETH Zurich undergraduate level courses are taught in German or English and graduate level courses are taught in English.
