Summary:

Assistant Professor of Computational Neuroscience at the Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University (joint appointment with the Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute).

The Wilkes Honors College (WHC), a selective liberal arts and sciences college within Florida Atlantic University (FAU), invites applications for a full-time (9-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computational Neuroscience with eligibility for a joint appointment in the Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute (I-BRAIN, https://www.fau.edu/ibrain). This interdisciplinary position will begin Fall 2022. It will carry a 1:1 teaching load, which is projected to include undergraduate courses in honors-level mathematical science (e.g., statistics, intermediate statistics, and data analytics) and supervision of senior honors theses. In addition, the Assistant Professor will be expected to seek and obtain external funding and to actively collaborate with researchers on our thriving campus.

FAU is committed to creating an accessible, supportive environment and an educational experience that recognizes diversity and cultural competence as integral components of academic excellence. Candidates who can contribute to that goal are encouraged to apply and to identify their strengths in this area.

The Jupiter campus of FAU is home to the WHC as well as to a Tri-Institute hub which includes the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI), UF Scripps Research Institute Florida, and I-BRAIN. I-BRAIN supports neuroscience research, education and community engagement programs across multiple FAU campuses and colleges. Faculty members of I-BRAIN are eligible to apply for pilot grants, graduate student fellowships, research technology support, and subsidized use of I-BRAIN Core facilities including the FAU Cell Imaging Core and Neurobehavior Core. I-BRAIN faculty pursue research across the full spectrum of neuroscience, ranging from genetic and molecular neuroscience, cellular and circuit analysis of brain function, behavioral studies in models and man, cognitive and computational neuroscience, and disease mechanism and treatment studies. I-BRAIN is an embodiment of the deep commitment of FAU to the neurosciences, and will be housed in a new, state-of-the-art building opening mid-2022.

With a rapidly growing cluster for data science at FAU, the selected candidate will be encouraged to foster interdisciplinary research collaborations both within FAU and across the Tri-Institute Jupiter campus. Across these units, interest and demand for computational analysis includes but is not limited to skills in Bayesian methods, multi-level modeling, image analysis, and machine learning techniques for modeling and interpreting neuroimaging, neurophysiological, and behavioral data.

Minimum Qualification:

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Computational Neuroscience, Data Science, Neuroscience or a related field (e.g., Data Analytics, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Biology, Psychology).

Preferred qualifications include a record of publications in area of expertise, experience in teaching and mentoring undergraduates, broad teaching interests, and an interest in the development and application of computational approaches in brain science.

The committee will view favorably demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences, and experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.  Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
