ROLE SUMMARY

The Proteomics team within the Integrated Biotechnologies (IBT) group in La Jolla, CA is dedicated to developing therapeutics that disrupt cancer biology or redirect the immune system against cancer cells. IBT researchers implement state-of-the-art technologies to identify therapeutic targets and enable drug discovery.

We are seeking a highly-experienced candidate to join us at the Principal Scientist level. The candidate would identify and lead implementation of innovative proteomic capabilities into our oncology pipeline. Additionally, the candidate would work closely with our Chemical Biology team to identify chemical footholds and assess target engagement. An extensive background in mass spectrometry and proteomic data analysis is vital for this position. Relevant methodologies include but are not limited to the identification of novel oncology targets, small molecule target deconvolution, small molecule target occupancy studies using chemical probes, direct substrate identification and characterization, protein turnover studies, protein post-translation modification studies and protein interactome analyses.

The successful candidate will work closely with individuals in drug design and oncology groups to innovate and develop the next-generation of therapies.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Spearhead efforts in identifying, developing, and implementing innovative quantitative protein mass spectrometry technologies for chemo-proteomics and general proteomics across the oncology portfolio.
  • Participate in all aspects of laboratory operations including proteomic technology evaluation, proteomic software evaluation, development of quantitative sample preparation methods and peptide separation methods, data analysis and interpretation.
  • Presenting and reporting data with follow up discussions for project teams including data impact and interpretation.
  • Complete and effectively manage multiple projects within timelines ensuring that all tasks and responsibilities are carried out according to high scientific and ethical standards.
  • Mentor and cross-train colleagues in protein mass spectrometry workflows.
  • Build collaborative and strategic partnerships with internal and external research teams (leading universities and research institutes) to apply proteomics for oncology discovery, impacting all oncology research focuses including: Systems Therapeutics, Tumor Intrinsic Biology, Immuno-oncology and Epigenetics.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and external/internal presentations are expected.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. in B iological Sciences, Chemical Biology, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of postdoctoral and/or industry R&D experience in a therapeutic research environment.
  • Applied mass spectrometry based proteomics required.
  • Experience with complex sample preparation methodologies as applied to protein mass spectrometry workflows including characterizing protein post translational modifications applications.
  • Experience implementing quantitative mass spectrometry-based strategies including isotopic labeling, isobaric tagging, SILAC, and label-free analysis (DIA, PRM/SRM) methods.
  • Experience with MS software analysis pipelines including IP2, Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant and Skyline.
  • General understanding of chemical proteomics methodologies including affinity enrichment, target occupancy and Chem-Seq.
  • General understanding of target deconvolution methods including CETSA, DARTS, FUSION and chemical probes/proteomics.
  • Knowledge on small-molecule, antibody, virus, and/or cell therapies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
