The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking a highly-motivated laboratory manager/senior professional research assistant determined to to help establish a collaborative, efficient and caring scientific team.  This individual will work with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Matthew Witkowski, whose laboratory aims to dissect the role of the immune microenvironment in childhood leukemia survival.  The position offers an excellent opportunity to jumpstart a new laboratory and establish a strong team culture, while supporting the core mission of the Colorado Children's Hospital: To approve the health of children through the provision of high-quality, coordinated programs of patient care, education, research and advocacy.

Nature of Work

  • Laboratory-based translational research on pediatric cancer immunotherapy.
  • Manage budget and purchases for lab, assist with ethics protocol writing, assist with project planning and training of new lab members
  • Conduct experiments; assist with project planning, data interpretation, authorship of presentations and publications

Example of Work

  • Leading lab management, including purchasing and maintaining budgets 15%
  • Supervise PRAs and other lab personnel in day to day processes and experiments 15%
  • Perform studies as related to cellular immunotherapy of leukemia 10%
  • Collaboration with PI, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and other PRAs 5%
  • Conducting mouse experiments is a major job responsibility (injecting tumor cells, mouse anesthesia, pre/post-op care, following mice for symptoms of tumor growth, medication administration, mouse sacrifice and tissue harvesting); animal facility staff does day-to-day mouse care, so this is not a usual part of job responsibility 15%
  • Management and maintenance of mouse colonies 10%
  • Maintaining cell lines in culture and in vitro immune assays 10%
  • Conducting experiments using techniques including drug/radiation treatment of cell lines, western blot, shRNA transfection/infection, qPCR, protein/RNA extraction, flow cytometry/cell sorting, immunofluorescence microscopic cell imaging 10%
  • Expansion, activation genetic modification of human and murine T cells in culture 10%

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology or related field, 5+ years of professional laboratory experience in lieu master’s degree
  • Minimum 1 year of cancer, molecular, or cell biology lab experience
  • Significant experience with lab mouse models

Required Competencies: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication in English
  • Ability to stay organized with multiple projects/experiments and carry out tasks, sometimes under time pressure
  • Knowledgeable of professional laboratory protocols
  • Significant experience with lab mouse models

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with mouse handling, injections, anesthesia, and organ/tissue harvesting
  • Experience in mouse colony maintenance
  • Prior experience in cell culture techniques
  • Experience in immunology research and/or flow cytometry
  • Previous supervisory experience in a laboratory setting
