The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has identified synthetic biology as a strategically important area.  The University is setting up infrastructure, including the establishment of the Institute for Synthetic Biology, to expand research and education in this important area at both Clear Water Bay (CWB) and Guangzhou (GZ) campuses.  Our vision is to develop technologies and solutions in the era of new bioeconomy to improve human conditions and harness innovations in this field to create a more sustainable economy as well as address the world’s pressing challenges.

We are now conducting a global talent search and are particularly interested in recruiting the Institute Director and senior faculty with distinguished and internationally recognized research track records in leading and coordinating large-scale collaborative projects in synthetic biology.  We are seeking competitive, ambitious and creative candidates applying synthetic biology for fundamental scientific investigation or innovative technology development in thematic applications in biomedicine, health technology, sustainable living, and food.  Applicants with strong research expertise in non-model microorganisms, genome engineering, and data analytics-enabled synthetic biology to accelerate and optimize design-build-test-learn cycle are all welcome.  For a highly qualified well-established scholar, an endowed Chair Professorship at the Institute would be considered.

The successful candidates are expected to teach and actively participate in developing the planned institute and associated programs so they should be highly self-motivated and eager to work in multi-disciplinary settings.  They would have academic appointments with one or two academic units at CWB Campus or GZ Campus.  At CWB Campus, the appointing units could include the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Division of Life Science, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Ocean Science, Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics, etc.  At HKUST(GZ), the appointment would be affiliated in Bioscience and Biomedical Engineering Thrust of the Systems Hub or other units.
