Job Details

HHMI is currently looking for an experienced Research Specialist, Tissue Culture Operations to work in the lab of Dr. Robert Tjian on-site at the University of California, Berkeley. More information about the Tjian lab can be found at https://www.tjian-darzacq.mcb.berkeley.edu/tjian/.

As the Research Specialist, you will be an adaptable, talented professional who can work well both independently and as part of larger lab teams, has good training skills and communication skills, is competent in all aspects of tissue/cell culture operations, and has experience with mouse/animal work.

 

Essential Duties:

 

Tissue Culture (TC) Operations

 

  • Trains new team members on cell culture routines (safety and aseptic practices).

     

  • Works with the lab’s TC assistant to track and restock TC consumables.

     

  • Aliquots TC drugs/antibiotics/transfection reagents and restocks TC media and supplements.

     

  • Handles hybridoma cell lines to provide antibody-containing supernatant to lab members and collaborators as needed.

     

  • Coordinates writing, renewal and amendment of the lab Biological User Authorization (BUA), in collaboration with other members of the lab.

     

  • Assists various lab members with heavy TC load – maintaining, passaging, genotyping, freezing and thawing various BSL2 cell lines.

     

  • Coordinates purchase and testing of large batches of fetal bovine serum lots.

     

  • Manages the lab’s cell line and liquid nitrogen database. 

     

  • Manages and performs the routine lab mycoplasma testing

     

Animal Operations

 

  • Trains other lab members on animal operations.

     

  • Performs routine maintenance of mouse colonies (animal handling, breeding, genotyping and terminal procedures).

     

  • Assists various lab members with heavy mouse work (breeding, culling colony, genotyping, etc.).

     

  • Coordinates writing, renewal and amendment of the lab Animal Use Protocol (AUP), in collaboration with other members of the lab.

     

General Lab Support

 

  • Coordinates dry-ice shipments.

     

  • Supervises/fills in the work of the lab TC Assistant (biohazard waste autoclaving and disposal, replenishing TC sanitizing supplies, dishwashing) as needed.

     

  • Assists and trains various lab members with cell sorting and flow cytometry.

     

  • Handles TC equipment maintenance and repair.

     

Qualifications:

 

Education and Experience

 

  • A bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences is required.

     

  • Previous hands-on experience performing similar job duties in a laboratory is required.

     

  • Experience with mouse and/or human embryonic stem cells would be a plus.

     

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and generally good computer skills are required.

     

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

     

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population.

     

  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.

     

  • Ability to train others on tissue/cell culture routines and other techniques as needed.
