Postdoctoral Research Associate

Applications are now being accepted for a postdoctoral research associate position in the laboratory of Dr. Laxman Gangwani in the Center of Emphasis in Neurosciences, Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.  Our research group is investigating the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration associated with the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, including spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Specific focus is on understanding the molecular mechanisms of R-loop metabolism and R-loop-mediated DNA damage leading to genomic instability and neurodegeneration. We use biochemical, molecular and genetic manipulation methods, and cell-based and genetically modified mouse models.

Candidates with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply. The title of the position will be determined by the qualifications and research experience of the candidate.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Highly motivated individuals with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, neurobiology or neuroscience.
  2. Previous experiences in mammalian cell culture, transfection, recombinant DNA techniques (cloning, PCR), recombinant protein expression and purification, basic molecular and cell biology methods such as immunoprecipitation, western blot, FACS and ELISA. Immunofluorescence microscopy. Gene expression analysis using RT-PCR.
  3. First author publications in internationally reputed journals in the fields of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology. Excellent writing and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Knowledge and experience working with genetically modified murine models, spatiotemporal inactivation of genes. Phenotypic and behavioral analysis. Experience working with differentiation of fibroblasts into iPSCs and neurons. Experience in primary neuron culture, RNA-Seq analysis, genome editing (CRISPR/Cas) and histological methods are preferable but not a must. Prior experience working with neurodegenerative disorders such as SMA, ALS and AD.
