Vision impairment has a broad-ranging adverse influence on patients, their families, and the societies. Glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are the leading causes of severe vision loss in elderly population worldwide. In the Ophthalmology department at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), we are committed to developing transformative therapies to save sight and restore vision to improve the lives of patients with glaucoma, AMD, and other blinding diseases.

We are seeking a highly motivated, innovative, and collaborative research scientist to join the in vivo pharmacology team for developing ground-breaking therapies. The individual will work in a collaborative, matrixed team environment, participate in designing and executing experiments in genetic and pharmacological animal models to support drug discovery efforts in ocular disease. In addition, the individual will also play a role in developing animal models and disease-relevant endpoints.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
•Plan, design and conduct in vivo pharmacology studies
•Perform extensive hands-on in vivo work including animal handling, compound administration, surgical procedures and tissue collection
•Conduct ex vivo protein, gene expression and imaging analyses
•Establish, optimize and characterize mouse or rat model of ocular diseases and develop assays to evaluate the effect of the therapeutics
•Work collaboratively within group, unit and across multi-disciplinary teams of scientists
•Maintain accurate, well-organized experimental records, perform data analysis, organize and communicate the results to team members, and present research progress at lab, unit and departmental meetings

 

What you will bring to the role:

•Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Biology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or similar field
•2+ years of recent and hands-on in vivo experience, including animal restraint, and compound administration via various routes, tissue collection and tissue dissection. Experience with ocular disease models is preferred, but not required.
•Proficiency in standard biological laboratory techniques, including hands-on experience with DNA, RNA extraction, PCR, ELISA, Western blot, immunostaining, and bio-microscopy
•Strong ability and desire to learn surgical skills and new technologies
•Detail-oriented, self-motivated team player, with the ability to work independently
•Good organizational skills and problem-solving skills
•Ability to analyze data with high quality standards and to effectively communicate the experimental results
