Princeton University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks an internationally renowned researcher to become director of the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment. 

The Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment brings an interdisciplinary perspective to the realm of energy and the environment. The center seeks to provide leadership in research to examine and address the global energy and environmental challenges we face today in order to ensure a sustainable future. The Andlinger Center aims to facilitate engagement and lower barriers to collaboration and innovation through its research, external partnerships, and educational programs. It enables collaborative research arrangements and offers resources to accelerate discovery and technological innovation; it convenes a wide variety of corporate and external partners with scholars and students to foster a vibrant and interdisciplinary community and offers a venue for intellectual discourse; and it fosters robust educational and training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, to enrich their experience and set the stage for them to become the next generation of leaders.  

A chief goal of the Andlinger Center is to translate fundamental knowledge into practical solutions that enable sustainable energy production and use, and that protect the environment. The center supports research and teaching in the areas of built environment, transportation and infrastructure; electricity production, transmission and storage; fuels and chemicals; environmental sensing and remediation; decision and behavioral science, policy and economics; energy systems; and environmental and climate science.

The university seeks a distinguished scholar with a strong record of leadership and service with a vision in transforming how we power the world. The successful candidate will hold a doctorate degree and have the scientific breadth and vision needed to advance a multidisciplinary research center. With substantial experience working in energy technologies and/or energy policy, the director will have considerable understanding of energy challenges at the national and international scale. The individual will hold a strong record of scholarly research in an energy-related area that will lead to an appointment as a full professor in a relevant home department. The ideal candidate for director will be a spokesperson, with the ability to attract necessary resources, both financial and people. They will have solid communications skills with knowledge on promoting existing and emerging programs of related research, partnerships and educational efforts to increase visibility of researchers, educators and policymakers. The director will have budget and management experience. 

Working closely with the Dean of SEAS, the position will build strong relationships with faculty and external partners. As a center leader, the individual will work with the advisory council and will chair the executive committee. The director will have experience in bringing together interdisciplinary teams, and in working effectively across university schools and offices.

The director’s overarching responsibilities are to build upon the tradition of excellence and the world class reputation of the Andlinger Center and enhance its visibility in the research community and industrial and public policy sectors. The director will lead the development of the center’s strategic plan, including short- and long-term strategies and policies, and develop objectives and goals that build research teams and form new partnerships and new ways of thinking to solve some of the world's most difficult energy and environmental challenges.

The director will ensure that programmatic activity meets with the center’s strategic goals and vision, and work with strategic planners across SEAS and the university to align with the respective goals. The individual will partner with the center’s associate directors to grow and strengthen the center and ensure the teams are delivering high quality programming. The director will oversee the development and execution of new programs, partnerships, and initiatives and lead a well-rounded mission for a research center that encompasses energy systems, policy, renewable energy and decarbonization technologies, environmental remediation, and social sciences. With the goal of strengthening collaborations, the director will identify avenues and leverage resources to pair researchers with industry leaders to develop the technologies needed to achieve a net-zero future. The individual will craft and manage strategic programs to advance the goals of building the capacity needed to turn research into action by inspiring creative solutions.

To be considered, applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant energy-related field with outstanding leadership experience in building programs and driving strategy. Applicants must have an excellent record of accomplishment in research, teaching, and service in one or more areas of energy-related research areas and in mobilizing disparate groups toward an ambitious goal. Applicants with experience in industry, government, or the non-profit sector will be considered; salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
