The Columbia Center for Translational Immunology (CCTI) and Columbia Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM) invites applications for a Clinical Veterinarian at the Associate Research Scientist level.

Veterinary services (60%) The successful candidate will serve as the Clinical Veterinarian of the Large Animal Transplant Program in the CCTI under Megan Sykes, MD, and ICM under Dr. Brian Karolewski, and will be responsible for overseeing innovative research in complex translational animal models including: animal selection and evaluation; preoperative conditioning; intra-operative anesthetic monitoring/management; and post-operative monitoring/care. Expertise in performing the anesthesia during complex surgical procedures in primates is highly desired. S/He will also participate in evaluation of animals prior to procurement to ensure proper selection and veterinary care from all vendors. Participation /presentation of clinical cases during weekly clinical rounds and meetings.

Regulatory compliance (30%) Candidate must have an expert knowledge of animal care and use guidelines, and animal welfare regulations including those promulgated by the USDA, PHS and FDA, which will assure the proper use of animals in the proposed research. Candidate will have a facilitating role in all CCTI animal experimentation, providing assistance and guidance on protocol design/writing, ethical use of animals and communications with the IACUC to CCTI investigators as needed, as well as serve as a liaison with IACUC, and maintaining close communications. This also includes writing and presenting adverse event reports to IACUC in timely manner. Management of CCTI surgical space with compliance of federal regulations. H/she will be responsible for maintaining state and federal DEA license with good standing for CCTI research use. Oversee ordering/stocking supplies/drugs for anesthesia, surgical and research use and maintaining the drugs/supplies in compliance with IACUC/USDA regulations.

Personnel management and administrative support (10%) It is expected that the successful candidate will collaborate with CCTI investigators and will provide one-on-one training to students, technicians and fellows. Candidate will also be required to train ICM residents and clinical veterinarians. Mentor, train and supervise veterinary technical staff performing research procedures and aesthesia. S/he will be the primary person responsible for coordination of animal research with ICM and review of charges in coordination with the Program Manager related to all Large Animal procedures. All Officers of Research are expected to participate in the educational activities of the CCTI, including seminars and laboratory meetings. Candidate will also be expected to assist with the generation of independent external funding for the translational transplant research program and will have opportunities to engage in research related to large animal genetics, breeding and phenotyping of genetically modified animals. Candidate should have experience in supporting multiple research projects, collaborating with scientific researchers and supporting publications in peer reviewed Journals.

Qualifications

DVM and DACLAM credentials required, PhD in Immunology or Molecular Biology, Virology or equivalent experience highly desired.
