Position Summary:

The Senior Category Manager is responsible for developing and driving category specific strategies in their assigned areas (e.g. medical supplies, non-medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, Facilities or Professional Services), into strategic and actionable categories, with a focus on "best value" and Total Cost of Ownership. Acting on own initiative, this position is responsible for all aspects of sourcing RFx activities, establishing supply partnerships, purchasing, coordinating and scheduling delivery for all direct, indirect and professional goods and services, as assigned. Provides the insight for category management, policy, supplier/material master data accuracy and supply standards (supplier, goods and services). Develops alternate sources of supply when vendors and suppliers are inadequate, such as analyzing markets and key commodities for supplier management.

Key Responsibilities include:

Sourcing & Category Management:
  • Facilitates the achievements of the objectives of Category Management with the goal of attaining Medical & Pharmacy Supplies and Services that offer an optimal balance of quality, service, availability and value.
  • Develops RFIs, RFQs and RFPs for services and products, including bid specifications, terms and conditions, bid evaluation and vendor selection.
  • Vendor Management - conducts audits to ensure vendor compliance and assess vendor performance. Works closely with key stakeholders to develop effective cost reduction strategies Analyzes assigned products, services and contracts with the goal of attaining the best value decision.
  • Provides category and spend informatics support and project management for the analysis of business, financial, and operational data that will be utilized to develop opportunities for changes in process and operations to include standardization and utilization of resources (supplies, equipment, and services.)


Minimum Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS) in Supply Chain Management, Business or another related field. A Master's Degree is preferred.
  • Three to Five years' experience in Strategic Sourcing and/or deep Category

Personal Skills:
  • Highly developed Emotional Intelligence.
  • Able to lead, influence and build consensus with stakeholders across multiple levels to secure needed results.
  • Adaptable, flexible, persuasive, proactive, encouraging, and motivating.
  • Logical mindset to analyze work assignments and proactively resolve problems
  • Must be detail oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Can work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Business Skills:
  • Strong Sourcing Analytical Skills and Tools is a must
  • Proficiency with Excel and Power Point
  • Experienced Contract Development & Management, Supplier Relationship Management, and Negotiation Techniques
  • Experience with Procurement related ERP system (such as PeopleSoft) is a plus
  • Ability to run sourcing projects focused on the acquisition of goods and services, negotiate pricing and related business terms from concept to contract.

Sourcing Category Expertise:
  • Analyzes and documents relevant business processes.
  • Defines, documents and reviews functional requirements.
  • Conducts detailed spend analysis for assigned sourcing categories and formulate conclusions.
  • Develops and maintains industry knowledge to be consider a subject matter expert for assigned sourcing categories
  • Ability to understand financial statement
  • Ability to demonstrate the understanding of the impact of implementing new price agreements
  • Vendor Management
  • Adheres to and enforces department standards, policies, procedures and industry best practices.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Additional Information:
  • To protect the health of patients and staff and to comply with new State of California mandates, City of Hope staff are required to show proof of full vaccination by September 30, 2021. Compliance is a condition of employment.
