The Internal Medicine Research Unit (IMRU) is seeking a highly talented and motivated scientist to drive exploration of new pathways and targets in relevant disease areas. As a key member of the Metabolism and Mass Spectrometry laboratory, this individual will be focused on the identification and validation of new targets, and the development of novel compounds for the treatment of metabolic diseases including cachexia, HFpEF, hyperinsulinemia and other diseases where dysmetabolic states play a key pathophysiological role. We are seeking scientists with a keen interest and deep understanding in metabolism and biological science that are commensurate with research experience. The candidate will be involved in drug discovery research projects from early target identification to drug development, and will thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment requiring excellent oral and written communication skills.
The successful candidate must demonstrate:
- Advanced knowledge of the principles, concepts, and practices in the fields of metabolism, cellular and molecular biology.
- Ability to work collaboratively with subject matter experts to integrate data from multiple sources (single nucleus, spatial or bulk RNAseq, proteomics, metabolomics / lipidomics, etc.).
- Innovation and self-motivation, capable of working independently as well as in the team setting.
In addition to a research seminar, the candidate will give a "chalk talk" presenting a research plan aimed at advancing understanding of diseases where dysmetabolic states play a key pathophysiological role. The candidate will be expected to integrate feedback and execute this research to identify or validate new targets once hired. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop proposals for potential new targets based on a combination of literature and internal/external multi omics data sets
- Aid in the triage of genome-wide association study hits with links to hyperinsulinemia, body weight regulation, and related diseases
- Design and execute experiments to functionally characterize GWAS hits in relevant in vitro and in vivo models
- Collaborate with scientists across the Research Unit to advance new targets for hypothesis testing and for establishing portfolio programs
- Participate in team meetings by presenting experimental plans and results
- Initiate collaborations with leading academic labs to enable internal research programs
- Supervise 2+ lab-based colleagues
- Strive to publish scientific and methodological results in high quality journals
- PhD in Biology or a related scientific field with 5+ years relevant post-PhD work experience in an academic or biopharma/biotech setting, utilizing innovative disease model systems or human data to solve biological problems
- Expertise and demonstrated experience in principles, concepts, and practices of cellular and molecular biology including generation and evaluation of in vitro and in vivo disease-relevant models.
- Working knowledge of cellular metabolism
- Exposure to metabolomics and lipidomics data
- Knowledge of immunology/inflammation pathways
