An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated protein biochemist with a passion for protein technology, to join the department of Protein, Cellular, and Structural Sciences (PCSS) at GSK's facility in Upper Providence, Pennsylvania. The primary responsibility of the department is to design, generate and validate biological reagents for discovery activities across all of GSK's therapeutic modalities. The department also provides the structural and mechanistic understanding of drug target, molecular recognition and mode of action to deliver the best molecule. The successful candidate will be responsible for the conceptual design and generation of protein reagents for use in GSK's small molecule drug discovery platforms enabling mechanistic studies, assay development, protein generation, or structural/biophysical workstreams. This scientist will have the opportunity to work on targets in multiple therapeutic areas as well as with automation/ high-throughput workflows. Experience carrying out automated methods for construct generation, protein expression and purification would be desirable. Automation, data management and in silico protein design skills are also desirable. The appointee will be capable of good experimental record-keeping and will have excellent written and oral communication skills. You will be expected to attend project meetings and contribute to project teams in a collaborative manner. An ability to work towards agreed timelines and effectively organise their work will be considered a key asset of the successful applicant. Title and salary will be commensurate with experience. Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Responsible for protein expression and purification platforms for various expression systems and development of new platforms Management of the processed reagents and data Work in a matrix team environment to enable optimal delivery of project and department objectives to the highest possible scientific standard Independently execute laboratory experiments and/or advanced data analysis, integration and interpretation with an emphasis on providing appropriate context for data and experiments in the progress of programs and/or platforms Ensure compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, standards and training, and safety training and practice Why you? Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a life sciences discipline (e.g. Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology) with 5+ years of relevant laboratory experience, or a Master's with 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience. 2 year experiences in recombinant protein expression using microbial hosts, and cell free systems 2 year experiences for protein expression and purification platforms for various expression systems and development of new platforms 2 year experiences in protein QC using various biochemical and biophysical tools. Preferred Qualifications: Qualified candidates should have strong track-record in either one or more of the following disciplines: Protein Expression/Purification, Protein Design If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus: Understanding multiple expression systems including bacterial, mammalian, baculovirus and cell free systems. Experience in protein purification-affinity chromatography, SEC and IEX Advanced data analysis experience, e.g. Excel or Spotfire. Experience in assay development and protein engineering is desirable. Experience in LIMS Practical knowledge and understanding of automation Excellent organizational, analytical and presentation skills Practical knowledge of gene synthesis, library construct design, and NGS Ability to plan and execute multiple tasks concurrently and evaluate multiple scientific strategies in parallel where appropriate Demonstrated strengths in high performance behaviors, such as building relationships, flexible thinking, and enabling/driving change. Ability to support reagent production timeline goals, generating fit-for-purpose reagents for assays, x-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, protein NMR, biophysics, and enzymology Why GSK?
