Professorship (W2) For the biology of the Dysbiosis interactome

If this is the applicant’s first appointment, the appointment offer will be made initially for 6 years. Following a positive evaluation (evaluation procedure), the professorship may be converted into a tenured position (Section 16 subsection 2 Number 4 of the Hamburg higher education act, HmbHG).


We are seeking a group leader at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center to set up a liaison group between the Center for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) at Universität Hamburg and the Leibniz Lung Center to be called "Biology of the Dysbiosis Interactome". The position is located at CSSB on the DESY campus in Hamburg but integrated academically into the Department of Biology at Universität Hamburg.

Applicants should be outstanding researchers in the field of pulmonary bacterial infection biology. Their research focus may be on cellular microbiology, host cell-pathogen interactions, or microbial cell-to-cell communication. The successful candidate must use structural biology and molecular imaging approaches, and be able to take advantage of the unique, outstanding infrastructure at CSSB and DESY, including high-resolution microscope technology such as cryo-electron, atomic force, and light microscopy, as well as the available beamlines. A laboratory (biological safety level 3) will be set up to facilitate research on bacterial BSL-3 pathogens such as the tuberculosis pathogen.

Applicants will be expected to collaborate with groups at the Research Center Borstel, the Department of Biology at Universität Hamburg, and the CSSB. The successful candidate will represent the Research Center Borstel at CSSB and participate in research networks such as graduate schools, clusters of excellence initiative, and priority programs.

We further expect the post holder to become involved in the University’s core research area Infection Research with a focus on the biology of resistome development.

The professorship involves a teaching obligation of 4 teaching hours per week per semester at Universität Hamburg. If tenure is offered, the teaching obligation decreases to 2 teaching hours per week. The successful candidate is expected to participate actively in the instruction of students at undergraduate and graduate levels as well as at the Research Center Borstel’s graduate school, Borstel Biomedical Research School. Teaching duties include lectures, seminars, and internships in the Department of Biology and the supervision of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral candidates.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Additional Criteria

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects.

The University Hamburg and the Research Center Borstel place particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.

Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment.
