This role is a critical member of the Global Medical Affairs Leadership Team.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for development and implementation of each Therapeutic Area’s Scientific Platform, high-impact strategic publications, physician-directed communications, medical education, and medical advocacy plans for company products.

The ideal candidate will have significant leadership experience in the pharmaceutical industry, experience with scientific platform development, scientific publications, and the ability to develop collaborative relationships with colleagues, key opinion leaders (KOLs), and medical societies alike.

The Global Leader will engage with multiple cross-functional Spark partners including the Research Organization, Clinical Development, Spark Marketing, Spark Patient Advocacy and Legal, Compliance and Regulatory Affairs.

Further, the Global Leader will engage external parties such as external scientific authors and Key Opinion Leaders and will represent Spark to the Larger Roche/Genentech/Chugai Global Medical Affairs Communications Groups.

They will oversee the timely planning and execution of strategic message development, and planning and execution for medical advisory boards and medical education programs.

This role requires the ability to interpret scientific/clinical data and help develop and communicate a compelling scientific platform and narrative for identified Spark products.

An intimate understanding of medical communications planning for both marketed products as well as products in all stages of clinical development is crucial.

Long-term budget planning and resource allocation skills are necessary, in addition to expertise in the rules and best practices governing medical education, publications, medical meeting and congress activities globally.

The individual must have prior management experience and be adept at managing teams and managing in the matrix environment of modern Pharma.



  • Collaborate with the Research Organization, Clinical Development, Medical and Commercial partners on developing a Medical Communications plan that is supportive of strategic medical objectives. Execute medical education programs, KOL engagement initiatives, scientific congress activities, and medical society outreach to gather insights, educate the medical community, and build advocacy for Spark development and launch activities. They will support scientific publication planning and delivery.

  • Develop forums and processes to communicate results and accomplishments to key stakeholders and to senior management

  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key opinion leaders, and our advocacy partners (professional and patient organizations)

  • Build strong collaborative relationships within the Spark & Roche/Genentech/Chugai organizations and ensure visibility of Medical Affairs activities. They will manage direct reports.


  • Doctorate degree in Life Sciences (MD, PhD, MBBS, PharmD, PhD)
  • Generally, has 10+years of experience in a pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare organization. At least 5+years of specific Medical Affairs Communications, Medical Affairs and Medical Education experience.
  • Experience leading & managing Medical Communication and/or Medical Education teams including defining functional objectives & priorities, functional budgets and people leadership
  • Strong communications skills (written and verbal); individual should be a skilled communicator and relationship-builder, who effectively networks internally and externally and represents the company and Medical Affairs in a professional and credible manner.
  • A proven ability to excel in a global matrix organization.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to coordinate complex deliverables & timelines across a wide array of internal and external stakeholders


  • Individual must be innovative and enterprising, with a proven track record of success in leading Medical Affairs Communication organizations with data dissemination and Key Opinion Leader engagement efforts emblematic of a global pharma or biotech organization.
  • In addition, the individual will be a key strategic partner with a unique understanding of the interplay among medical affairs, external medical stakeholders, and strategic business objectives.
  • Strong leadership and technical capabilities are required.
  • The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal communication skills along with problem-solving expertise.
  • This person must be independent, multi-tasked and results-oriented with a hands-on attitude in a fast-paced and energetic environment
