Summary

The Elkins Pancreas Center (EPC) specializes in the treatment of pancreatic cancer, pancreatic diseases, and pancreatitis, through pancreatic surgery, gene therapy, clinical trials, general surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. We are working to discover effective new methods to diagnose and treat pancreatic cancer.

The EPC within the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is looking for a skilled Research Coordinator I who will work on all aspects (recruitment, data collection, and biospecimen processing) of clinical research studies in pancreas cancer research under direction of the principal investigators (Dr. William E. Fisher, Dr. E. Ramsay Camp, and Dr. George Van Buren, II), study team, and relevant departmental leadership. The Research Coordinator I will support the PI to facilitate clinical trial activities working with BCM staff across multiple teams (i.e.; Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center) to ensure that pancreas cancer trials increase in number and patient accrual. This position will work across multiple clinic locations and teams in the Dan L Duncan Cancer Center and Department of Surgery.

The Research Coordinator I will also have the opportunity to conduct individual research using the EPC's dataset for poster projects, manuscripts, and presentations.

Job Duties

  • Collects, processes, ships, and maintains paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlined in study protocol.
  • Interviews, screens, and recruits patients for study; explains process and procedures to educate participant regarding the research study.
  • Collects patient information; processes documents and enters information into a database.
  • May perform venipuncture (blood draws) and obtain vital signs on study participants following appropriate on the job training.
  • Maintains records and regulatory documents and records for research studies.
  • Schedules research participant for tests and procedures such as laboratory tests, CTs, and other studies specific for the research protocol.
  • Corresponds with patient throughout study.
  • Maintains and organizes inventory of study supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates day-to-day activities of research protocols, which includes screening, enrollment, and monitoring of research participants.
  • Ensures accurate data collection, documentation, organization and safety of research participants.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Three years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Phlebotomy certified or willing to become certified.
