Pullman, WA

DESCRIPTION OF POSITIONS: The Department of Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN) at Washington State University (WSU) is seeking to fill two permanent tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications. Positions will be located at our flagship campus in Pullman, Washington. Preference will be given to applicants whose research programs will synergize with existing strengths in departmental research including the areas of substance use disorders, energy homeostasis, and sensory neuroscience (see https://ipn.vetmed.wsu.edu/research for details). Special consideration will be given to candidates with research expertise in the broadly-defined areas of Affective and Motivational neuroscience using experimental approaches from the molecular to behavioral levels. It is expected that successful candidates will develop and maintain an innovative and extramurally funded research program, while contributing to the teaching mission of the department.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The distribution of effort is flexible, but typical appointments are 65% research, 25% formal teaching in undergraduate, graduate, and professional courses and mentoring, and 10% service. The successful candidates will provide evidence of, or strong potential for, establishing a productive, extramurally funded research program. In addition, candidates will be expected to provide innovative instruction in undergraduate, graduate and/or DVM curricula.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have one of the following degrees: an earned PhD in Neuroscience or similar biological/biomedical science field, or an earned MD, DVM, or equivalent professional degree by the time of hire. Demonstrated potential to secure extramural funding, publish in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and provide high-level instruction in the classroom and laboratory is required. Additionally, for the Associate level, candidates must have a currently funded extramural research program and a record of successful mentorship (graduate students / postdocs). Further, IPN seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.

DEPARTMENT: The Department of Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN) at WSU is part of a large, vibrant Neuroscience community that spans the Pullman, Spokane, and Vancouver campuses. The department is committed to a climate that values and fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition, we are committed to the retention and success of new faculty, and as such the successful candidate will be provided with a departmental mentoring committee, peer mentors/mutual mentoring, and will have access to university programs such as the External Mentor Program (https://advance.wsu.edu/externalmentors/). On the Pullman campus, IPN is home to faculty, with broad external funding, and housed in a state-of-the-art research building with extensive core resources (https://ipn.vetmed.wsu.edu/equipment-resources). In addition, IPN is home to strong graduate and undergraduate programs in Neuroscience and maintains a vibrant and collegial work community. Along with the core facilities, all faculty have access to cutting edge programs including the Program of Excellence in Addictions Research (PEAR), The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Program (ADARP) and the Translational Addiction Research Center (TARC), the Center for Cannabis Policy, Research, and Outreach (CCPRO) and the Sleep and Performance Research Center (SPRC).

COLLEGE: Many collaborative opportunities exist within the Department and across the College of Veterinary Medicine which has strong programs in infectious disease, reproductive biology, cell signaling and genomics, as well as animal and public health (https://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/departments).

UNIVERSITY: Washington State University is a Tier 1 Land Grant Research institution with 65 doctoral degree programs and professional medical, veterinary and pharmacy degree programs. Research expenditures are ~$345 million a year. WSU is one of the largest residential universities in the Northwest and has branch campuses across the state.

AREA: Washington State University’s Pullman campus in Eastern Washington sits in the rich agricultural area known as the Palouse. Pullman is known for excellent schools and as a safe place to live and raise a family. Pullman is only eight miles from the University of Idaho at Moscow and approximately an hour south of Spokane. Recreational opportunities abound with skiing, fishing, hunting, whitewater rafting, camping, hiking, and rock climbing all nearby. Pullman is near numerous rivers, lakes, and wilderness areas; including the Snake, Salmon, and Clearwater rivers, Coeur d’Alene, Pend Oreille, and Priest lakes, and the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness to name a few.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications received by January 16, 2022 will be considered in the initial review process.

Applications must include a cover letter that states the rank being sought and indicates reason for interest in this position at this time, a current curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests and goals (3 page maximum), a description of teaching experience and/or philosophy, a statement that indicates the applicant’s experience with and commitment to diversity and inclusion (each 1 page maximum), and the names and contact information (including email addresses) of three references.
