Job Description:

Raritan Valley Community College has an anticipated opening of Laboratory Assistant, Chemistry for the Science & Engineering Department.

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services and the general direction of the Chair of the Science & Engineering Department, the Laboratory Assistant will maintain and prepare the Chemistry laboratories and activities for all Chemistry courses. The Laboratory Assistant will assist with maintaining and ordering equipment and supplies, maintaining and updating inventory and SDS files, updating course preparation notes, and overseeing the security of the labs.  The Laboratory Assistant will also provide support for the Water Quality Lab, including periodic maintenance of equipment and preparation of materials, as well as support for Physics laboratory set up, schedule permitting. This position is 37.5 hours per week, may require some evenings, and will require Saturday rotation weekend work.

Responsibilities:

Prepare and set up materials and equipment for Chemistry laboratory experiments. Remove chemicals and/or equipment, clean up, and replenish materials between Chemistry laboratory sections.

Coordinate with faculty to order lab supplies and equipment to support Chemistry laboratory experiments; maintain and replace equipment when necessary. Test run experiments as needed.

Assist with the Bid-Order process for ordering laboratory supplies.

Demonstrate proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste.

Assist in maintaining and updating the inventory of chemicals, materials and equipment in the Chemistry laboratories and storage areas; restock as necessary.  Maintain proper storage of supplies and SDS sheets.

Assist in general maintenance of Chemistry laboratories, preparation and storage areas. Help to maintain security of these areas on Saturdays, between semesters, and during summer sessions. Ensure that prep rooms and class room doors are locked at the end of class.

Provide periodic support to the Water Quality Lab, including equipment maintenance and the preparation of materials.

Assist with the set up and take down of materials for Physics laboratory experiments when necessary, schedule permitting.

Perform related duties as required by supervisor.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of an Associate's degree in Science, with at least one year laboratory experience in Chemistry.
  • Ability to prepare and organize laboratory and demonstration materials.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Computer skills, specifically MS word and MS excel.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good general subject knowledge.
  • Ability to accommodate change.
  • Reliable and dependable.
