Cytotechnologist

Job Purpose

Works closely with Pathologists and clinical lab staff to screen cytology cases for abnormalities. Position located off-site at BCM Pathology Histology lab at 2525 W. Bellfort.

Job Duties

• Accessions and processes all cytology specimens according to established procedures.
• Screens GYN, FNA and Non-GYN cytology preparations microscopically and renders accurate diagnosis.
• Performs lab procedures, including staining, cover slipping, Pap processing, HPV testing, and CT/CG testing.
• Assists in fine-needle aspirations.
• Maintains QC records of work.
• Stays informed of current CAP/CLIA requirements and checklists and new developments in cytology.
• Maintains continuing education requirements.
• Successfully completes annual proficiency testing for Gyn screening.
• Accurately documents diagnosis in the LIS system.
• Performs and documents all required quality control, quality assurance and quality management.
• Adjusts work schedule to accommodate departmental/organizational needs.
• Maintains a safe environment within the Laboratory, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials, security, emergency preparedness and HIPAA.
• Utilizes digital slide scanning and manage the slide scanning workflow including receipt, accessioning and return of slides.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biological science or related field.
• One year of relevant experience.
• Certified Cytotechnologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in a related field.
• Three years of relevant experience.
