Job Duties

Postdoctoral Position in Antibiotic Resistance Enzyme Structure and Mechanism, Palzkill Lab

A postdoctoral associate position in mechanistic enzymology is available in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at Baylor College of Medicine. The laboratory is interested in the structure and mechanism of antibiotic resistance enzymes. In particular, we are interested in the structural and mechanistic basis of action of naturally occurring, drug-resistant variants of beta-lactamase enzymes that result in the inactivation of beta-lactam antibiotics. These enzymes rapidly hydrolyze beta lactam antibiotics and are a major source of bacterial drug resistance. Knowledge gained on the structure and mechanism of these beta-lactamase variants will be used for rational drug design. The studies will involve protein purification, pre-steady state enzyme kinetic analysis and X-ray structure determination. The successful candidate will have experience in protein purification, enzymology, and X-ray crystallography. Candidates should have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and a strong record of productivity as evidenced by publications. Written and oral presentation skills as well as the ability to collaborate effectively are essential.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Required: MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • Experience Required: None Required.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: None Required.
