Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology (MIC)

University of Virginia School of Medicine

The University of Virginia seeks the next Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology (MIC), the largest basic science department in UVA Health. Highly interdisciplinary, MIC faculty pursue breakthrough research and collaborate widely to connect discovery to cure. The Department is home to 26 faculty and over 70 Ph.D. and MSTP Biomedical Sciences graduate students in the areas of immunology, cancer biology, bacteriology, infectious disease, biodefense, cell-signaling, virology and gene regulation. MIC faculty achieve high levels of funding and, in FY21, a 62 percent grant submission success rate, with earlier-career faculty realizing notable success. The prominence of the Department extends nationally where nearly two-thirds serve on NIH or other significant study sections and review panels. In recent years, faculty have published in Blood, Nature, Cell, Immunity, and Nature Communications.

The UVA School of Medicine has an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, a Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), and a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) program. Six cutting-edge research centers, eight basic science departments, and 21 clinical departments work collaboratively and with shared purpose under renewed School of Medicine leadership.

An exceptional scientist and leader, the Chair will shape a compelling vision for the future of basic biological sciences. They will ensure and enable excellence in scientific discovery and foster collaborations within the Department and across UVA. The Chair has overall responsibility for operations and strategy across the Department; cultivating research and sustaining a thriving education enterprise are paramount. This position requires a renowned investigator and experienced leader with a record of exemplary scholarship, innovation in education, and training. Ideal experience includes successful administrative leadership at an academic medical center. Accomplishments in retaining, recruiting, and mentoring outstanding faculty, staff, and students—including those traditionally underrepresented in medicine and science—are required. UVA seeks managerial and business acumen to navigate the complex financial pressures facing research in academic medical organizations today. A Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree are required.
