Research Microbiologist GS-0403-12/13
Salary Range of $77,488 to $119,787 per year
Announcement Open: November 17, 2021 - December 17, 2021.
The USDA, ARS, Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research Unit (FSEPRU) in Ames, Iowa is seeking a permanent, full-time Research Microbiologist to develop an innovative research program focused on limiting colonization of food animals with the foodborne pathogen Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). The incumbent works as an independent investigator and as a team member for research project "Intestinal Microbial Ecology and Non-Antibiotic Strategies to Limit Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and Antimicrobial Resistance Transmission in Food Animals". The incumbent will use in vitro and in vivo systems to identify how specific factors in the environment (intestinal microbiota, host immune status, stress) influence colonization of STEC and commensal E. coli in cattle, identify mechanisms in E. coli that regulate these responses, and develop non-antibiotic interventions for controlling STEC colonization. In team research, the incumbent provides expertise in microbe response during the interaction with the food animal host to develop predictive tools and targeted interventions against STEC. Experience with global/targeted bacterial mutagenesis, reporter gene fusions and assays, and/or bacterial gene expression and regulation analysis is desired.
The successful candidate will join a group of scientists conducting similar research for other foodborne pathogens and food animals (cattle, swine, turkeys), and work closely with a microbial ecologist, immunologist, and STEC microbiologist on research objectives. Collectively, the group works to increase information and technologies needed to enhance pre-harvest food safety in the U.S. and around the world.
