The ideal candidate will have research expertise in drug delivery and/or pharmaceutics with a significant focus in neuroscience. Research focus in neuroscience is of strategic importance within the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Specifically, priority areas of focus for neuroscience research within the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy include neurodevelopmental disorders, leveraging existing UNC expertise in epilepsy, rare neurological diseases, and autism; neurodegeneration, building off existing work in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease; and opioid use disorders. Additionally, candidates with machine learning, synthetic biology, or computational modeling approaches applied to drug delivery will be of particular interest. We are seeking a candidate who has already established or possesses the potential to establish a competitive and independent research program. The successful candidate must have a strong track record of publications that demonstrate innovation and an interest in translating novel technologies into real-world impact for patients. Candidates are expected to contribute to the education and training of students in both the Doctoral of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) graduate program and the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) professional program in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.unc.edu) is the #1 ranked School of Pharmacy in the nation (U.S. News & World Report) and one of five health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, and Medicine) at the Chapel Hill campus. In 2021, the School released its three-year BEYOND strategic plan (https://pharmacy.unc.edu/about/oe/strategic-plan/). The School is home to five academic divisions: Chemical Biology and Medicinal Biology, Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics, Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy, and Practice Advancement and Clinical Education. Specifically, DPMP promotes human health through innovative drug, imaging, and vaccine delivery research and education and aspires to be a diverse and inclusive community of people to accelerate new thinking and ideas in research and education. DPMP’s external research support exceeds $13M annually, and DPMP faculty  have successfully spun off over seven biotech companies in recent years. DPMP is home to both the NCI-funded Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence and the Carolina Cancer Nanotechnology T32 Training Program. The School is also home to the Eshelman Innovation Institute (unceii.org/), funded by a $100M commitment from Dr. Fred Eshelman, which was launched to forge a game-changing approach to translating bold ideas into real-world impact for patients.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutics/Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Engineering, or a closely related discipline. The selected candidate will have an appointment in the DPMP and will be eligible for membership in the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC), the Carolina Institute for Nanomedicine and the Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery, as well as many other institutes or centers located on UNC campus. Also, UNC is in close proximity to Duke University, Research Triangle Park, and North Carolina State University who often organize and collaborate in efforts with UNC faculty. These efforts include symposia, seminars, and conglomerate groups including North Carolina Biotech Center (www.ncbiotech.org/) and NCTracs (http://www.tracs.unc.edu/). Additionally, technology development services are available through Eshelman Innovation Institute, NC Biotech Center, NCTracs, and Carolina Kick Start (http://innovate.unc.edu/).The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer.
