The Laboratory of Dr. Eric Smith, Director of Translational Research, Immune Effector Cell Therapies at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is recruiting a forward- thinking and innovative PhD scientist who shares the vision of advancing the field of immunotherapy via gene and cell therapies for rapid clinical translation of their work.  Post-doctoral research fellows will gain experience at every step of the process from conception to design using platforms such as lentiviral, CRISPR and/or mRNA based.  

Dr. Smith is deeply committed to the growth and success of each trainee that joins the lab. He believes that mentorship is not something that happens in the background as trainees pursue their research, but should be intentional and personalized for each member of the group. He spends the time to meet trainees' individual needs, not only in terms of their scientific growth, but also with a focus on career goals and development. The Smith Lab’s research is multi-disciplinary and exceedingly collaborative. Trainees will further benefit from Dr. Smith’s prior experience translating cell therapy inventions from the lab to the clinic, which has resulted in 9 awarded or pending patents, licensing/collaborations with industry, and multiple products stemming from bench work reaching patients.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, independent thinker with a tremendous work ethic.  The position will require great planning and organizational skills. An ability to work well with others as part of a cohesive team, take initiative, and creatively problem solve are a must.

Requirements

The responsibilities of this full-time position will also include some general lab duties as outlined below.

  • Design and perform experiments both individually and collaboratively.
  • Prioritize research plan.
  • Provide advice and training for junior members of the lab.
  • Work on problems of diverse scope.
  • Develop, modify, and improve standard lab operating procedures.
  • Select methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Analyze and present data both informally and formally.
  • Write career development grants.
  • Prepare manuscripts.

Supervisory responsibilities

None; however, the post-doc is expected to provide guidance and training to lab technicians/technical research assistants and other junior lab members on established processes and procedures.

Qualifications

The ideal addition to the Smith Laboratory will:

  • be an innovative, forward-thinking critical scientist.
  • be able to Minimum 2 year commitment.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Outstanding planning, organizational, multi-tasking skills.
  • Enjoy working in a team environment with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
