Assistant Professor, Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics

The Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics, within the College of Computing and Informatics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The successful candidate in this position will work primarily in a newly constructed research space as part a cluster of faculty hires in One Health; visit for more information.

The thematic focus for the cluster hires will be the combination of life and computational sciences, particularly ecology, molecular biology, genomics, and organismal biology as these fields apply to infectious diseases, public, and ecosystem health.  Candidates that have research programs in whole genome phylogenetics, phenotype-genotype relationships in host pathogen systems as aided by high performance computing and multiomics are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants for this position must hold a Ph.D. in the biological, computational or related sciences. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in research via a strong publication record, aptitude to secure extramural funding, as well as a commitment to mentoring and teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an externally-funded research program including students.  The candidate will benefit from and be expected to fully participate in team science efforts in the center such as cross disciplinary research, grant writing, joint symposia, and curriculum development.  Applications that promote diversity through their mentoring, research, teaching, and outreach are especially encouraged.

The Bioinformatics and Genomics Department is a research-intensive unit with both a Ph.D. program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and a M.S. in Bioinformatics. Visit for more information. Faculty in this Department support an undergraduate Bioinformatics Minor and Bioinformatics Concentrations within the BS and BA degrees in Computer Science.  The Department has excellent BSL-2 and BSL-3 wet lab facilities, several high-performance computer clusters, and has dedicated space for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and staff.

Applications must be made electronically at and must include a cover letter, CV, contact information for at least three referees, a statement of research interests (maximum 5 pages), a statement of teaching philosophy (maximum two pages), a statement of fostering diversity (maximum 2 pages), and PDFs of three peer-reviewed publications.  Please highlight potential contributions to UNC Charlotte and the Bioinformatics Research center within the statement of research interests.

As an EOE/AA employer and an ADVANCE institution that strives to create an academic climate in which the dignity of all individuals is respected and maintained, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte encourages applications from all underrepresented groups.
