Clemson University: College of Science: Physics & Astronomy
Endowed Chair in Medical Biophysics

Location: Clemson, SC

The Department of Physics and Astronomy, in collaboration with the Department of Bioengineering and Prisma Health, invites applications to become the founding holder of the Dr. Waenard L. Miller, Jr. '69 and Sheila M. Miller Endowed Chair in Medical Biophysics, a tenured faculty position at the full professor level.

The inaugural holder of the Dr. Waenard L. Miller, Jr. '69 and Sheila M. Miller Endowed Chair in Medical Biophysics, will support Clemson University's effort to attain international prominence in Medical Biophysics by joining an interdisciplinary team with excellence in molecular and cellular biophysics, radiation medical physics, biomedical devices, nanomedicine, and bioinformatics.

The Dr. Waenard L. Miller, Jr. '69 and Sheila M. Miller Endowed Chair in Medical Biophysics will also have the opportunity to enhance collaboration across existing centers of excellence within the University (SC TRIMH, EPIC, the CUBEInc, SCBioCRAFT, the Clemson University School of Health Research, and the Clemson University Center for Human Genetics) and establish active collaborations with physician-scientists and clinical partners at Prisma Health.

The successful applicant will build a vibrant and diverse group of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers at Clemson University committed to bridging basic and clinical research. Clemson University is eager to complement existing strengths in:

  1. structure/function/dynamics relationship of biological macromolecules,
  2. single molecule to cellular biophysics,
  3. enabling technologies for diagnostic, therapeutic, and biomedical devices and instruments,
  4. developing clinically relevant therapeutic strategies (particularly nanomedicine, radiation therapy and targeted drug selection and design).

Scholars in all fields of medical biophysics will be given consideration.

As one of the top public land grant research universities in the nation, Clemson University attracts and powerfully unites students and faculty whose greatest desire is to make a difference in the lives of others. Having both the top Carnegie designation (Research Very High) and ranked among the best national public universities by U.S. News & World Report, Clemson excels in teaching, research, and service and harnesses the power of convergence as we tackle some of tomorrow's grand challenges and prepare the next generation of thought leaders. Our Colleges and Research office are committed to supporting interdisciplinary research teams so that the scholarship of our researchers is bounded only by their curiosity.

Our main campus, located in Upstate South Carolina, sits on 1,400 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along the shores of Lake Hartwell. Clemson offers a wonderful standard of living, close proximity to two major cities (Atlanta and Charlotte), and a commitment to facilitating dual career couples. Nearby Greenville, SC regularly ranks among the most innovative and livable mid-size cities in the United States. State of the art wet-lab space is available at Prisma Hospital providing opportunity for regular interaction with clinician-scientists. Clemson University also provides access and support to the Palmetto Cluster - a high performance computing resource ranked 9th among academic institutions. The Clemson Light Imaging Facility and the Clemson Electron Microscopy Facility provide researchers access to world-class microscopy services including the SU9000 - the world's most advanced SEM/STEM. Boasting a resolution 0.4 nm @ 30 kV, this facility is capable of analyzing beam sensitive soft materials at high resolutions due to its relative low energy. Clemson University recently established an interdisciplinary MS degree program in Medical Biophysics; a Medical Physics PhD program is pending approval by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. These new graduate programs will provide the candidate with the opportunity to teach and mentor students from numerous departments across campus. Clemson University is also investing in faculty hires in health innovation - one of the pillars of our strategic plan. In addition, our BS-MS partnership with South Carolina State University provides an excellent pathway to recruit underserved students into one's research group.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant will have an internationally recognized research program in Medical Biophysics with a well-established track record of external funding, scholarly achievement, student mentorship, productive collaborations with clinicians, and commitment to inclusive excellence.
