The Position

The University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications and nominations for the position of (PBS) Department in the College of Pharmacy.

The University seeks candidates who are innovative and accomplished researchers and leaders in their field with a strong commitment to excellence. The successful candidate will join a community of scholars numbering 79 faculty in the College of Pharmacy and 25 faculty in the PBS department. The position will dedicate 40% effort to departmental administration. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a funded and collaborative research program and to contribute to the teaching, advising, and mentoring of Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), undergraduate, and graduate students in a manner consistent with the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, the PBS Head leads a robust Department that provides the foundational science support for the College, including teaching at all levels, and the conduct of cutting-edge research in the pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences. The Department Head’s general responsibilities are outlined in UGA’s Statutes under Article IX, and include the following:

  • Provide outstanding leadership, vision, and strategic planning for the department.
  • Administration of all departmental programs in the areas of instruction, research, and service.
  • Commitment to the success of students and faculty.
  • Communicate effectively and build strong partnerships with UGA senior administrators.
  • Consult with departmental faculty and prepare the annual budget of the department.
  • Report annually to the Dean on the teaching, research and service programs of the department including assessments of the performance of faculty members in the department.
  • Foster a dynamic, collaborative atmosphere to stimulate cutting edge research programs in the department.
  • Recruit and retain competitive research faculty to enhance the national and international profile of the department.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral Degree in a pharmaceutical or biomedical sciences related field.
  • Eligibility for appointment at the Professor level with tenure at time of hire.
  • At least three years of administrative responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least five years of progressive administrative responsibility in pharmaceutical or biomedical sciences based at a comprehensive research university.
  • At least 10 years of faculty experience.
  • A record of achievements in research including a history of strong extramural funding.
  • A record of achievements in professional/graduate education.
  • An understanding of academic financial planning and fiscal management.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
  • lead and collaborate within the framework of a complex, integrated organization.
  • communicate effectively across multiple units.
  • structure a unit to support numerous missions.
  • foster strategic partnerships.
  • cultivate and lead teams.
  • supervise and mentor faculty, staff, and students.

The position is a 9-month, tenured position with an administrative appointment to an endowed professorship along with administrative and summer salary supplements relating to the administrative role. To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as a full professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national/international reputation in research and leadership to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

The Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences

The Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences (PBS) is an interdisciplinary program with basic science research spanning broad areas, including molecular pharmacology and pharmaceutics, drug discovery and delivery, protein engineering, and medicinal chemistry. It is one of two academic departments at UGA’s College of Pharmacy.

The PBS Department offers graduate programs culminating in a Master of Sciences (M.S.) as well as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. The programs provide world-class research and educational opportunities in pharmaceutical and biomedical science research with access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The programs are offered in a comprehensive, hands-on atmosphere designed to train scientists who plan to work at the top of their profession.

At the undergraduate level, the PBS Department offers a B.S. program in Pharmaceutical Sciences. This degree offers hands-on career development in a classroom environment in which learning is delivered by outstanding faculty and complemented with real-world laboratory experiments. The B.S. can be coupled with other programs to generate exciting Double Dawg dual degree opportunities.

College of Pharmacy Locations

The UGA College of Pharmacy’s main campus is in Athens and is comprised of two buildings — the new $44M Pharmacy South Building and the adjacent recently renovated R.C. Wilson Pharmacy Building. Both spaces feature classrooms, research laboratories, administrative offices, and student common areas. There are several extended campuses which are embedded with the region’s top healthcare systems. For third- and fourth-year PharmD students, graduate students, and residents, these include: the Southwest Georgia Clinical campus in Albany, the Augusta campus, and the Southeast Georgia Clinical Campus in Savannah.
