Position Description

The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a faculty position in environmental policy at the assistant professor level.

We seek a scholar with expertise in environmental policy with a U.S. focus that supports existing and emerging areas of excellence in the department, including U.S. law and policy surrounding conservation; climate change; coastal sustainability; environmental justice; renewable energy; sustainable agriculture; and water supply, quality and rights. The selected candidate will have demonstrated expertise in deploying qualitative and/or quantitative social science methods appropriate to their discipline and research agenda. The faculty member will teach across the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, including undergraduate courses in environmental policy, economics, and/or law, and a graduate core course in environmental policy, that is cross-listed with the Coastal Science and Policy program (CSP) for Masters and Ph.D. students (ENVS 240/CSP 242).

Applicants with any or all of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: excellence in research; a research program that complements existing research strengths in the department; demonstrated potential to attract extramural funding; evidence of excellence, inclusivity, and innovation in teaching and mentoring; demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with natural scientists; and/or interest in serving on the core faculty of the CSP program.

UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a diverse student population and high proportion of first-in-family undergraduate students. We strongly prefer candidates who understand the barriers facing women, low income, and minoritized individuals who are underrepresented in higher education. This will be evidenced through the successful candidates contributions to creating an equitable and diverse scholarly environment through their undergraduate and graduate student teaching and mentorship, research, life experiences, and/or service.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
