Position Description

The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in ecological aquaculture at the assistant professor level.

We seek a scholar who engages in research in ecological aquaculture, with connections to agroecology and sustainable food systems. The successful candidate will bring expertise in technical, physiological, chemical, and/or molecular approaches in aquaculture, along with knowledge of sustainability in food production. Specific areas of research may include but are not limited to topics such as integrating sustainable aquaculture systems with agroecological management systems, developing aquaculture innovations to minimize impacts on wild fish populations, sustainability of production systems, or reducing negative environmental impacts. The faculty member will teach a course in sustainable aquaculture as well as contribute broadly to graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring in the Environmental Studies program. This includes opportunities in the undergraduate Environmental Studies and Agroecology majors, the Environmental Studies and the Coastal Science and Policy graduate programs, and a campus-wide Global and Community Health initiative and curriculum.

Applicants with any or all of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: excellence in research; a research program that complements or extends existing research strengths in the department; demonstrated potential to attract extramural funding; evidence of excellence, inclusivity, and innovation in teaching and mentoring; and/or a demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with social scientists.

Strong UCSC traditions in agroecology, sustainable food systems, fish biology, and coastal ecology create a supportive framework for the selected candidate to help propel the campus into a leadership role in the fast-growing sector of ecological aquaculture. UCSC has made major investments in aquaculture research infrastructure at the Center for Agroecology's certified organic farm and it maintains a close partnership with the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center, with both agencies maintaining on-campus facilities. The faculty member is expected to connect with and contribute to these resources, and to engage in partnerships with allied campus research programs in the School of Engineering and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a diverse student population and high proportion of first-in-family undergraduate students. We strongly prefer candidates who bring a clear understanding of the barriers facing minoritized communities who are underrepresented in higher education, and who have engaged in teaching, research, professional and/or public service that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. This will be evidenced through the successful candidates contributions to creating an equitable, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and diverse scholarly environment through their undergraduate and graduate student teaching and mentorship, research, life experiences, and/or service.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
