Position Description

The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Agroecology and Watershed Ecology.

We seek a scholar who engages in research on agroecology, biogeochemistry, ecosystem processes, soil ecology, and/or human impacts on nutrient and water fluxes in agricultural watersheds. The selected candidate will have interests in understanding if and how agricultural technology can be used to mitigate environmental problems associated with agriculture while ensuring access, appropriateness, and utility for a wide range of growers including small-scale, diversified, and organic farmers. The candidate will have experience working with environmental monitoring, biogeochemical analysis, and/or the food-energy-water-soil-climate nexus, and will bring analytical skills, technical expertise, and knowledge needed to work across temporal and spatial scales. We are especially interested in candidates who understand the biophysical, ecological, and social complexities of agroecosystem management, and consider agroecology as a culturally-grounded, transdisciplinary, action-oriented, and politically-engaged transformation of the food system.

Applicants with any or all of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: (1) Excellence in research that complements existing departmental strengths; (2) Demonstrated ability to attract extramural funding; (3) Evidence of and a commitment to excellence in teaching; (4) Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with social scientists; (5) Demonstrated ability to situate agroecology and watershed ecology in a historical context, including colonial legacies of science and social injustices related to food systems; and/or (6) Experience partnering with underserved farmers, fishers, aquaculturists and/or farmworkers to seek transformative change of food and farming systems.

The faculty member will be expected to develop a nationally and/or internationally recognized research program within the arena of watershed ecology and agroecology and teach a course on Agroecosystem Analysis and Watershed Management and other courses that contribute to the Environmental Studies and Agroecology majors or graduate program. The candidate will play a leadership role in the growing AgTech Collaborative and will have the opportunity to fruitfully engage with the Center for Agroecology and to develop collaborations with faculty in the Baskin School of Engineering. We also welcome applicants interested in participating in the cross-departmental Coastal Science and Policy graduate program.

UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a diverse student population and high proportion of first-in-family undergraduate students. We strongly prefer candidates who understand the barriers facing women, low-income, and minoritized individuals who are underrepresented in higher education. This will be evidenced through the successful candidates contributions to creating an equitable, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and diverse scholarly environment through their undergraduate and graduate student teaching and mentorship, research, life experiences, and/or service.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
