Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute of the ETH Domain. Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Eawag has over 500 employees at its main site in Dübendorf near Zurich and in Kastanienbaum near Lucerne (Switzerland).

The ETH Board is the strategic management and supervisory body of the ETH Domain, which also includes ETH Zurich, EPFL and three further federal research institutes: PSI, WSL and Empa. Due to the upcoming retirement of Eawag’s current director, the ETH Board is advertising the position of

Eawag Director

in line with its mandate. The ETH Board is responsible for proposing a candidate for this position to the Swiss Federal Council. It is planned that the person appointed will hold a joint professorship at ETH Zurich and EPFL.

Requirements
You are a nationally and internationally renowned personality with a recognised scientific record in aquatic science and technology and with a deep understanding of their impact on the sustainable use and management of water resources. You are experienced in managing a research institution, a large research group or large interdisciplinary projects and in implementing research results together with public authorities and practitioners. You have a strong interest in collaborating with public bodies and other research institutions, in particular with the institutions of the ETH Domain, in order to strengthen the Domain‘s ability to dynamically respond to new challenges and perform mission-driven, impact-oriented research. To that end, your ability to lead and inspire development and change processes is essential. Familiarity with Swiss and European political and legislative processes and an understanding of Switzerland‘s cultural diversity would be an asset, helping you to successfully interact with private and public stakeholders. You have a proven ability to communicate with the public, preferably supported by a good command of German, French and English. You are a dynamic personality with wide interests, strong leadership skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and you promote an inclusive work environment.
