Tenure Line Faculty - The Departments of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The Departments of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Institute of Computational and Data Sciences at Penn State University invite applications for an open rank tenure-line faculty position for experts in the development or application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in the areas of Chemical, Molecular, or Structural Biology. The chemical and biological fields are awash in data from diverse sources including, but not limited to, next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, Cryo-EM, and crystallography. There is great potential for computational techniques to rapidly advance many areas of chemistry and biology. Penn State has committed to being a leader in the development and application of AI to a variety of fields through investments including a faculty cluster hire in this area. Applicants will find a thriving computational community at Penn State supported by the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, and the Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Scientific Applications, as well as experimental experts in chemical, molecular, and structural biology. Candidates should have a PhD and a record of accomplishment in developing or applying machine learning in one or more of these areas. Candidates who have an experimental component to their research are encouraged to apply, although a strong computational component is required. Successful candidates for Assistant Professor will demonstrate a strong research potential and commitment to interdisciplinary research and education. Candidates for Associate Professor will have a strong track record of research, publications, and funding. Candidates for Full Professor will have a track record of research, publications, and funding that distinguishes them nationally and internationally.

The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS), one of five university-wide interdisciplinary institutes, is home for advanced interdisciplinary computation and data-enabled collaborative science at Penn State. ICDS fosters both high-impact computational and data science methodologies as well as their applications to address a broad range of scientific and societal challenges, multifaceted models, and their societal impacts. ICDS supports a vibrant community of scholars, which includes more than 30 co-hired faculty and over 300 affiliated researchers with access to ICDS advanced research computing infrastructure called Roar and a cadre of technical experts, research scientists, and engineers. Further information on the institute and its co-hires can be found: For more information on the Penn State Chemistry Department and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department visit and

An application consisting of a cover letter, current CV, a one-page diversity statement, a one-page teaching statement, and a research statement up to five pages in length (excluding references) should be submitted to, and the Penn State jobs site. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level also need to arrange for three reference letters to be submitted to Academic Jobs Online; this step will be initiated at a later stage of the interview process for applicants at the Associate and Full Professor level. Review of completed applications will begin on November 22, 2021, and the search will continue until the position is filled.
