Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion

Virginia Tech seeks to recruit an innovative researcher in the area of metabolism and obesity for a tenure track faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level.  The successful candidate should address issues of the health effects of obesity and/or eating behaviors either during development and/or throughout the lifespan.  Investigators who focus on human subjects’ based research or those who combine human subjects’ research with laboratory animal based research programs are encouraged to apply.  Behavioral approaches in humans that include studies of food choice, decision-making, and individual variation in metabolism along with genetic, biochemical and physiological approaches that may be applied in humans and/or animal models are welcomed. The person hired for this position will join 37 other faculty led teams at the research institute. The position will be located at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC (https://research.vtc.vt.edu) on the university’s health sciences campus in Roanoke, Virginia.  In addition to the original 100,000 square foot research institute that opened in 2010, a new adjacent 139,000 square foot research building (http://fralinbiomed.info/buildingtour) opened this year in which the new faculty member will have their research program.  Facilities at the research institute include two human whole room calorimeters, metabolic kitchen and dining areas for the study of human nutrition and eating behaviors, multiple research MRIs for human and animal research including high field MR guided PET and MR guided focused ultrasound, multiple cellular/molecular imaging facilities including spinning disc confocal microscopy, standard laser scanning confocal microscopy, scanning block face electron microscopy, super resolution microscopy as well biochemical and molecular biology cores including Mass Spec as well as behavioral testing suites for animals and humans.  The obesity and metabolism unit is immediately adjacent to the new cardiovascular sciences unit that already houses four teams studying heart disease including cardio-metabolic disorders.

Applications will be reviewed continuously until the position is filled. It is expected that initial interviews will begin in October, 2021. To apply, please submit your application including curriculum vitae, detailed statement of research accomplishments and plans, and teaching/mentoring philosophy, and a statement of plans for supporting diversity and inclusion at www.jobs.vt.edu, posting # 517731.  Be prepared to have at least three references post their letters of support to the same site.
