Present 3rd and 4th generation synchrotron sources as well as X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) provide X-ray beams with the high degree of coherence. Coherence properties of the X-ray beams can be effectively used, for example, in imaging providing the basis for so-called coherent X-ray diffractive imaging (CXDI). This type of imaging may be performed either in the forward geometry, providing information on electron density of the sample or for crystalline samples, in Bragg geometry, providing information on the strain field inside the nanoparticles. In our Coherent Scattering and Imaging group at DESY we exploit the structure of mesocrystals applying angular X-ray cross-correlation analysis (XCCA) technique that allows to reveal the angular position of nanocrystals in a supercrystal media. This is especially important for the development of modern nanoelectronics and functional devices.

One of the important directions of research in our group is understanding of coherence properties of the XFEL sources. We perform Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometry experiments and determine such important information as degree of spatial coherence and pulse duration at different XFEL sources.

  • Good knowledge or strong interest in nano physics and next-generation instrumentation
  • Excellent computational skills
  • Excellent knowledge of English and international teamwork abilities
