Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) announces a search to recruit an Associate Vice President (AVP) for Business Engagement to lead its efforts to develop productive partnerships with private sector businesses. Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, with a secondary reporting line to the Vice President for Research, the AVP’s purview includes all potential aspects of business engagements, including philanthropy, sponsored research, executive education and student recruitment. The AVP will be responsible for developing and implementing holistic cultivation and relationship management strategies for top corporate prospects to achieve these outcomes, and will also oversee the CMU Center for Business Engagement, a key element of CMU’s business engagement strategy. The AVP will also serve as an active member of the leadership teams for both the divisions of University Advancement and Research, and will lead a team of corporate relationship management professionals in identifying prospects, and developing and proposing strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of major corporations and institutional partners to achieve university and divisional goals.

Effective collaboration is key to success in this role and in achieving university-wide corporate relations objectives. The AVP will work closely with academic and administrative leaders, college- and school-based advancement and corporate relations staff, and faculty. The AVP will also be expected to develop and maintain relationships with the business engagement leads at each of the university’s seven (7) colleges and schools, and with key campus partners such as the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship, the Office of Sponsored Research, the Center for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation, and the Career and Professional Development Center, among others.

It is an exciting time to join the Carnegie Mellon community. Founded in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie, the institution has soared to national and international leadership in higher education and research, especially since 1967 when the Carnegie Institute of Technology merged with the Mellon Institute for Industrial Research to form Carnegie Mellon University. A birthplace of innovation since its founding, it continues to be known for creativity, solutions to real-world problems, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Its alumni have earned distinction around the globe – from Nobel Prize recipients to Tony Award winners, from Wall Street CEOs to Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, and from groundbreaking educators to pioneering researchers.

Carnegie Mellon University is a highly regarded global research university, ranked 28th in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. For more than a decade, CMU has consistently ranked as a top 25 university in the U.S. News & World Report rankings.

A bachelor’s degree is required for this position; a master’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred. At least 7 to 10 years of experience in fundraising, corporate relations, sales or market development, or comparable field, in either the higher education context or the corporate-side of university-industry engagement, is preferred, as is specific understanding of research in the physical sciences, technology and engineering fields, in corporate, academic and government settings.
